HEALTH SYSTEMS IMPROVEMENTMEDICAL STUDENT SCHOLAR AWARDS

(Funded by the Frieschlag-Roethle Endowment Fund and the UC Davis Practice Management Board)

2018 APPLICATION

The goal of the Freischlag-Roethle and UC Davis Practice Management Board scholar awards are to encourage medical students to explore scholarly work in health systemsimprovement early on in their careers. Two scholarships will be awarded to medical students who have completed their first year of medical school and who are in good academic standing.

The primary goal ofthe awards is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of how the health system can improve patient care and health care delivery.The project for this year’s award winners will be participation in a UC Davis Healthquality improvementinitiative to improve blood pressure control. The award winner will gain knowledge in improvement science (by completing a series of select UC Davis School of Medicine courses), apply improvement methods (by participating in a clinical quality improvement project to improve care for hypertension), and develop leadership skills (by helping lead activities of the UC Davis Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Student Interest Group). The award winners will be mentored by faculty and staff. Their work will contribute toward UC Davis Health’ mission of integrating medical education with health systemsscience. Since scholars will conduct key project activities during the Summer 2018 quarter, successful applicants should commit to being present in the Sacramento area during that period.

Applications will be screened by the Medical Student Research Committee based on the essay below, and up to 4 applicants will be selected for interviews. Successful applicants will be notified by February2018and will be expected to present their work at the Medical Student Research Forum and the UC Davis Annual Quality Forum in March 2019.
