Course description

This course enables students to enhance their knowledge of the French Language and to further develop their language skills through the study of twentieth-century francophone literature and culture. Students will participate in oral communication, reading and writing activities as they study authentic novels, songs, plays, and newspaper articles from French-speaking communities. The use of technology in this course encourages students to access a wide variety of information effectively and with confidence and to employ it in a manner which is consistent with Gospel values. Furthermore, this program enables students to develop holistic and analytical thinking skills, sensitivity to other cultures and peoples as well as critical awareness of one’s own culture.

Overall Expectations

By the end of this course, students will:

Clisten and respond to spoken texts intended for a French-speaking audience;

Cdiscuss ideas and opinions relating to topics being studied;

Cunderstand simple statements spoken in the accent or the idiom of various French-speaking regions in North America;

Cuse appropriate language conventions during oral communication activities

Cread a variety of materials intended for a French-speaking audience;

Cgather information for different purposes from a variety of sources and apply it in other contexts;

Cread literary works and other authentic texts to acquire an understanding of the cultures of French-speaking people;

Cidentify and understand language conventions used in their reading material.

Ccommunicate ideas and opinions clearly and coherently, choosing a form appropriate to the context;

Cwrite in a variety of forms, adjusting the language to suit the audience;

Cidentify and use appropriate language conventions in their written work.

Students in the French Immersion program should have their own French/English Dictionary, Bescherelle, French Language Dictionary.

Reporting of Student Achievement

Seventy percent of the final grade will be based on the student’s most consistent level of summative assessments taken throughout the course (with special consideration for most recent assessments) and thirty percent of the grade will be based on a culminating task and a final examination. Please refer to the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Assessment and Evaluation Guideline.

Assessment Practices/Tools

The teacher will use a variety of evaluation and assessment strategies including: checklists, conferences, interviews, questionnaires, observation, tests, exploration of responses to written material, multi-graph texts, reports, letters, dramatizations, simulations, language lab, daily classroom interaction. Students are encouraged to become responsible independent thinkers and should demonstrate academic integrity in all classes.

Students are asked to be prepared, be respectful, do the assigned course work, speak only in French and to be in full uniform.

Ccommunicate with French-speaking students through the Internet
