Glendale’s Book Club will re-open during Term 1. It first opened during session, 2008/09, with the financial support of the Parent Council.

The aims of this project are –

  • To contribute towards the school’s aim of fostering the reading of books for pleasure from an early age
  • To support our pupils to become successful learners by motivating them to read more widely
  • To provide good quality books at a much lower price that would be paid in the major book shops
  • To allow parents to purchase books for their children conveniently and safely
  • To support families with the buying of books by spreading the payment over several weeks

The Book Club enjoys an excellent following from children across the year groups, with many of our pupils becoming regular visitors. A large number of books are bought each year! Indeed many children collect sets of a favourite author or a particular style of book. Some children drop in for a special book to buy, whilst others look forward to taking their book home after a few weeks of hard saving!

A survey of parents suggests that many families are very supportive of the Book Club. Below is a short summary of the findings –

  • Independence – Almost every family noted the steps their children had taken in independently selecting books of their choice.
  • Increased reading activity – Children were reading more material and with greater enthusiasm than before. Parents noted their children being more willing to try new words by themselves and many felt the increased reading supported other areas of development eg story writing / knowledge of the wider world etc.
  • Enjoyment – The excitement, fun and enthusiasm with books pleased many families (and teachers!).
  • Sharing – The new books were willingly shared with other family members. Brothers and sisters were sometimes read to as well as the grown ups at home!
  • Cost – Many families thought the price of the books was good and many particularly liked the paying up option and the recycling opportunity offered to the children.

Please support your child in visiting the Book Club. We are open every Monday from 12.30pm to 1.05pm. All books cost £1.50. Books may be returned for reclying. Your child will receive 30p towards his/her next book and we will recycle the old books for 50p. Books can be paid for in full or the cost may be spread over several weeks.

Let’s support our children to become enthusiastic readers and help them on their journey to literacy!
