Following the death of Tsar Feodor Ivanovich in 1598, Russia was thrust into a period known as the “Time of Troubles.” Bloody power struggles for the throne, civil uprisings, threats of foreign domination and deadly famines ravaged Russia until 1613. New tsars emerged who stabilized Russia, introduced reforms, and solidified their roles as absolute monarchs.
