The meeting began at 6:30 PM. Doug Neese started the meeting with welcomes and introductions. Dr. Dace Lewis brought the invocation. Dinner was provided by Tiffany King, instructor of the CTEC Culinary Arts department who received an overwhelming commendation for the meal.

At 7:15 PM the committee moved to the CTEC auditorium where Ms. Heather Blackmon opened the meeting by thanking all who attended for their time and desire to serve on our advisory committee. Information about the Career and Technical Education Center, the programs offered, and the importance of the advisory committee was discussed. Ms. Blackmon discussed the importance of our ability to select students who enroll in our programs that would enable us to provide the industry with students who would meet or exceed their expectations of an entry levelemployee. She also expressed a desire to place interns with the committee members who were in need or willing to take student interns.

Mr. Terry Drummond began the business portion of the meeting by introducing NATEF, who they are and mandated accreditation by the NC DPI. Mr. Drummond also reiterated Ms. Blackmon’s comments regarding the importance of each member and their involvement with the automotive program and how much they are appreciated for taking time out of their busy schedules to serve.

Mr. Drummond introduced the new NATEF MLR (Maintenance & Light Repair) module that CTEC would be seeking accreditation for. He gave the following advantages:

  1. No required specific minimum hours for any of the program areas allowing instructors flexibility when planning courses.
  2. Additional coverage of virtually all vehicle maintenance items.
  3. Reduced total tasks
  4. No additional equipment
  5. No community college articulation required.

Mr. Drummond asked for a motion to accept the NATEF MLR model as the accreditation model for CTEC to pursue. Eric Stone from Western High School made the motion and a second was made by Tony Holland from Crenshaw Hyundai. The vote was unanimous and it was resolved that the MLR model is the model of NATEF accreditation suitable for the Career and Technical Education Center.

Mr. Drummond introduced the required NATEF MLR cross reference for the automotive courses offered at CTEC. He indicated the items in red were not taught within the current curriculum structure due to lack of the required vehicle or equipment that would allow the students to perform the task. Mr. Drummond asked the committee to take time and review the documents and respond via e-mail with their recommendations at their earliest convenience.

Mr. Drummond outlined the remaining NATEF Accreditation process and projected time of completion. A date for the anticipated onsite evaluation would likely be sometime late October, early November.

Mr. Drummond explained the necessity of requiring the next advisory committee meeting to be a working meeting with the committee evaluating the facility and conducting an annual survey prior to the onsite evaluation for final approval.

The time of future advisory committee meetings were discussed with options of a luncheon meeting, 4:00 PM meeting and 6:30PM either on Tuesday’s or Thursday’s. The committee unanimously chose 6:30 as the time of future meetings and chose Tuesday as the best day of the week to meet.

Marc Hunter from Alamance Community College made a motion to accept future meeting time of 6:30 PM on Tuesday. Marshall Zimmerman of Dick Shirley Automotive seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous and it was resolved that all future advisory committee meetings will be held on a Tuesday at 6: 30 PM.

It was further resolved that the committee would convene Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 6:30 PM.

Mr. Drummond advised the committee they would be reviewing the new curriculum as it becomes available to us after attending summer conference and any items of discussion regarding the curriculum are tabled until the next meeting.

Mr. Drummond introduced the application for NATEF accreditation and explained the application was incomplete due to waiting on the new curriculum structure which has delayed the compilation of the necessary documents required to meet the intentions of standard 6.5. Mr. Drummond asked the committee members to sign the application and once it was complete they would be provided a copy. All the required signatures were obtained.

Mr. Drummond introduced Mr. Doug Neese to discuss the status of the tools and equipment of the automotive program at CTEC. Mr. Neese gave the status as better than any previous individual program due to the incorporation of three standalone programs into one. The committee was given an equipment inventory and asked to review the items and make recommendations regarding replacement, discontinued use or additions as industry requires.

Eric Stone automotive instructor from Western Alamance High School was introduced and gave the status of the automotive program at Western. He elaborated on the progress of the program and that Western was getting better and better each year and that through various donations the shop has been remodeled. Mr. Stone commented that his program like CTEC obtained tools and equipment from the other programs as well. He indicated that the 220 volt connections for the tire balancer had not been completed but a work order has been submitted.

Mr. Stone commented on not having the luxury of choosing students but remains optimistic and that he has had some very good students who are employed as a result of completing the automotive program at Western. Mr. Stone expressed his desire to have the committee meeting at Western HS sometime next year.

Mr. Drummond introduced Mr. Peyton Holland NC State Skills USA Advisor. Peyton Holland gave a brief history of himself throughout his adolescent years and attributed his success to his involvement in SkillsUSA. He also emphasized the importance and potential success of CTEC to begin and run a full student chapter. Peyton stated there were 2,000 students across the State that participated in the NC State Conference this year which was the largest participation in the history of the State Conference. Peyton recognized Ms. Tori Pace a student from the auto program at CTEC, for her success in obtaining employment with IAA as only the second person in the nation to obtain the position she has. This was attributed to her outstanding communication skills, attitude and leadership qualities that she possesses. Peyton commented on the value of SkillsUSA for our students and indicated that he would be meeting with Ms. Blackmon, Mr. Drummond and Mr. Neese sometime in the near future to discuss the chapter for CTEC.

The business portion of the meeting was adjourned to the automotive shop at CTEC where Ms. Tori Pace gave a diagnostic presentation on a live vehicle demonstrating what she has learned during her time at CTEC. The response to her presentation by the committee members was overwhelming. Tori received several job offers at the end of her demonstration.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.
