The ABC’s of First Grade

Aa:Absent - When your child is Absent from School,

please send in an excuse form or note the next day.

Art – Your child has Art with Mr. Shreck on Day # 4

Bb:Backpacks -A book bag or backpack should be brought to school every day to carry important papers and folders to and from school. Please check your child’s book bag daily.

Bookbags- Students have book bags containing leveled books to read

during Daily 5.

Birthdays–No edible birthday treats may be sent for birthdays. You are also welcome to donate a book to the class in honor of your child’s birthday or send in a pencil orother nonedible treat in lieu of the snack.

Cc:Common Core Standards are a different way of teaching math and Reading encouraging students to think.

Close reading is taking a closer look at reading through re-readings and interacting with the book.

Communication – Communication is the key to a successful home-school partnership. Please look for the homebook folder and Homework Helper and initial it. Also look for the First Grade Flash through e-mail, and other paperwork to stay informed.

Daily 5 centers encourage independence and build fluency.

Ee: Emergency Forms – These are kept on file in our room. If any of your information changes during the school year, please notify us right away.

Ff:Folders – I will send home your child’s homebook folder and take home folders each night. Please review the papers in the folder. Please have your child complete unfinished work.

Gg:Gym – We have gym class on day #5 with Mr. Burrell.

Please have your child wear sneakers on gym day.

Guided Reading – We will meet in small groups where your child will read many books on his or her Guided Reading Level this year.

Hh:Homework – Your child’s homework assignments are written on the Homework helpereach night. Please help your child remember his or her homework every day.

Healthy Snacks- Please try to bring inhealthy snacks for snacktime, and story and snack.

Ii:In-Service –October13 is an in-service day for teachers. No school for students.

Jj:Join – Please join in and help the PTO!

Kk:Kindness –A little kindness goes a long way! Fill someone’s bucket with kindness!

Library – We go to library on day # 3 with Mrs. Mang. Students

may check out 2 books and return on the following Monday.

Little Readers – Every Wednesday students will get a new Little Reader book. Students should practice reading the Little Reader, complete the work, and write a sentence or 2 about the book in the folder.

Mm:Music – We go to music class on Day # 1 with Miss Super.

Money – Please send your child’s lunch money to school in an envelope that is clearly marked with his or her name and room number. You may send cash or make checks payable to the East Penn Cafeteria Fund.

Nn: Newsletter –Look for my weekly newsletter in an e-mail usually every Friday. The First Grade Flash will have important information and updates.

Oo:Open House –Mark your calendars now. Open House is on

May 13th . It’s a great time to show how our students have grown.

Pp:Parents – Parents are a child’s first teachers! We appreciate all your help and support!

Parent Pick up – If you plan to pick up your child at the end of the school day, please send in a note in the morning. Please be here by 3:00. Please use the crosswalks.

Qq:Quiet time – What’s that? Quiet time with your child is a great way to find out about the day’s events or to share a book.

Questions- we will focus on asking and creating higher level questions.

Rr:Respect – We show respect for ourselves, each other, and property in our class.

Rules Routines and responsibilities are reinforced every day.

Ss:Snack time – we eat a daily snack if time permits . Please send in a small, healthy snack with your child. No drinks are necessary. They may bring in water bottles. NO PEANUTS PLEASE!

Vv:Vacations – If you are planning a trip or vacation during the school year, you must fill out an educational trip form prior to your trip. 2 weeks prior or it will be illegal.

Vocabulary: Every Friday your child will have a new list of vocabulary words to study. Students will read the words to a volunteer each week.
