AAC Clinic

The AAC Clinic will be combined with content from the AAC Course for two credits total. Please see syllabus for info re: AAC Course.

Population:

Typical Diagnoses: Individuals with:

Congenital and developmental disabilities (e.g. ASD, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, childhood apraxia of speech, genetic syndrome, chromosomal disorder)

Acquired disabilities (e.g. CVA, TBI, etc)

Progressive conditions (e.g. muscular dystrophy, MS, ALS, PPA)

Temporary needs (d/t surgery, GuillainBarre syndrome)

Typical cognitive-communicative diagnoses: Individuals with:

Aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, expressive language disorder, mixed expressive-receptive language disorder

Age range: ~6-9 mos (when a disability that places communication development at risk is first ID’d) through lifespan

Common concomitant conditions: Mobility needs (e.g. w/c bound); accessibility needs (e.g. need for scanning); inadequate sensory processing (e.g. sensitivity to sound, touch, colors, etc);psychosocial issues (e.g. depression, anxiety, etc)

Client context(s):Must be able to communicate:

Clinic Formats:

1:1 Assessment

Location: HEDCO Clinic

Frequency: 1-2x/wk

Description:Students will conduct interview to learn client/parent/caregiver goals and obtain pertinent medical/social history. Will use dynamic and informal assessment (play, observation, and/or structured conversation) to determine then plan additional assessment/s. When appropriate, students will generate funding report by week 6. See “AAC Eval Procedures” for more info.

1:1 Individual Appointments

Location: HEDCO Clinic

Frequency:1-2x/wk

Description:Students will address social, linguistic, strategic, and operational competencies. When appropriate, will also address pre/literacy goals. Will plan activity-based instruction and incorporate routines. Will use ALgS throughout session.Will encourage clients to share “my news” weekly. See “Pediatric AAC Approaches” and “Pediatric CPS” for more info.

AAC Pediatric Social Group

Location: HEDCO Clinic Peds Room (187)

Frequency:1x/wk

Description:Students will address social, linguistic, strategic, and operational competencies in a group context. Will plan activity-based instruction and incorporate routines. Will use ALgS throughout session. Will encourage clients to share “my news” weekly. See “Pediatric AAC Approaches” and “Pediatric CPS” for more info.

AAC Adult Social Group

Location: HEDCO Clinic Group Room

Frequency:1x/wk

Description:Students will address social, linguistic, strategic, and operational competencies in a small group context. Will target partner-focused questions and supported conversation. Will incorporate scripts and photo albums. Students will provide visual and written supports. See “Adult AAC Approaches” and “Adult CPS” for more info.

4J Contract

Location: 4J Life Skills Classrooms

Frequency:1x/wk; Wednesdays 11:00-2:00 with travel
Description:Students will enter life skills classrooms for ~2 hrs every other Wednesday (pending assigned school). Will travel via own transportation or with supervisor. In classroom, will model ALgS for EAs and teachers (then coach). Will provide general education about AAC. See “Pediatric AAC Approaches” and “Pediatric CPS” for more info.

ALS Contract

Location: client homes, ALFs

Frequency:1x/wk; Fridays 9:00-1:00 with travel

Description:Two different students will travel to client homes or ALFs each week. Willtravel with supervisor. Will address access (including mounting) and AT needs. See “ALS docs” for more info.
