Overview

The 2009 Docent Scholarship supports outstanding Science Docents who have decided to pursue a career in teaching. Recipients will receive a scholarship based on their desire to pursue teaching, leadership, demonstrated abilities in the classroom, and teamwork.

The 2009 Docent Scholarships will be presented to the scholarship recipients at their High School’s senior awards ceremony held in the spring. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,500 to $2,500 (for a full-time student) to cover the cost of tuition, books or other college fees. Ten to fifteen scholarships will be disbursed directly to the college/university the student will attend in Fall 2009.

Eligibility

All senior High School Science Docents are eligible to receive a 2009 Docent Scholarship. Nominations must be self-submitted with two letters of recommendation from a club advisor, teacher, principal, former employer or mentor. The letters of recommendation should highlight your specific strengths that will contribute towards your success in college and as a teacher.

Awards Process

·  Applications with supporting documentation must be submitted to the Project Tomorrow office by 5 pm on Friday, April 3rd, 2009. Applications may be faxed to 949.609.4665, emailed to , hand-delivered or sent via USMAIL (must be postmarked by Wednesday, April 1st).

·  The Docent Scholarship Advisory Committee will evaluate all applications, and if necessary, contact the applicant for additional information. Interviews will be conducted between April 22nd, and May 8th, 2009.

·  All scholarship recipients will be notified by May 31st, 2009.

Award Criteria

The 2009 Docent Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding senior Science Docents who are interested in pursuing teaching, and have demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and effective teaching. The scholarship applicant must have a declared major related to the field of teaching, minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (9-12), and be accepted into an accredited University, College or Community College by June 2009.

In addition, please provide a copy of your official high school transcript, and two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, club advisor, mentor, principal or former employer. The letter must be signed on the envelope sealed by the referring individual.
