  1. Presentation of the candidate – a biography

The famous European artist VJEKOSLAV VOJO RADOIČIĆ was born in 1930 inPožega, a picturesque town in Croatia. However, following the path of life, he has lived in Budva, Kotor (both in Montenegro), Zagreb, Rijeka (Croatia) and Vienna (Austria). He studied at the Faculty for Traffic and Maritime Affairs, and at the Faculty of Economics. From his early age Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić expressed talent and love for visual art and drawings. During the fifties he published his first caricatures and illustrations in various magazines, and intensly created paintings, drawings and collages.

From this period Vojislav Vojo Radoičić initiated contact and kept communication with well-known Croatian painters, Vilim Svečnjak and Krsto Hegedušić. Luckily, at the time he was working in a shipping company, which enabled him to travel frequently, and to visit many countries, and meet different cultures and painting heritages. In 1960, he became a member of the Croatian Artists Association. In the 1970s he exhibited in London, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Bern and Venice. In these years Vojislav Vojo Radoičić founded great friendship, artistic cooperation and joint projects with Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

From 1979 to 1995 he lived and exhibited in the most prestigious exhibition places in Vienna. During that period of his great artistic success in Vienna he still occasionally visited Zagreb and Rijeka. He is member of the VBKO (Veren Bildender Kunstler Oestereich, Wien – Schonbrun). In those years he had numerous exhibitions all around Europe, the USA, and three significant expositions in Australia. At the time, apart from painting and small sculptural works, he started creating illustrations for children, graphic and print design

He has been working for television and theatre, and done more than 40 set designs for performances at home and abroad.

Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić has exhibited at more than 170 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in Rijeka, Zagreb, Varaždin, Makarska, Osijek, Dubrovnik, Vienna, Venice, Florence, London, Paris, Bern, Brussels, Munich, Bonn, Aachen, The Hague, Düsseldorf, Tokyo, Melbourne, New York, etc. Since 1995 he has been taking part in the Illustration Biennale in Bratislava, and Japan, and at the International Biennale of Illustration in Teheran.

Also, in 1984 Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić was awarded Prix Suisse de peinture naïve, in Morges. In 1988 he was awarded the Annual Award of the City of Rijeka, and decorated with “Order of the Morning Star with the Image of Marko Marulić” by President of Croatia for great achievements and contributions to culture. The artist Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Purchasing Prize for the holdings of the Ostend Museum, 1989; the two most relevant Croatian prizes for children’s books illustrations ( the 1984 Grigor Vitez Award and the 1989 Ivana Brlić Mažuranić Award).

In 1996 Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić received a special acknowledgment by Deša, a charity and peace agency in Dubrovnik. In 2002 he was nominated for the prestigious international award, the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustrations for children. Also, he designed the sets for the prize-winning performance of the Osijek Children’s Theatre in 2001 Bird and Ship (Ptica i brod), a children’ theatre performance initiated and motivated by the picture book published previously by the artist.

In 2004 Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić was awarded by the International Children’s Festival in Šibenik, Croatia ( for his high artistic achievements in the field of children’s books illustrations and design. For illustrations in children’s books “Morski igrokazi” (“Sea plays”) and “Bajkoviti igrokazi” (“Fairy plays”) by Croatian author Ludwig Bauer, Radoičić was awarded the most relevant Children Illustrations’ Book Award in Croatia, “Grigor Vitez Award 2005”.

To summarize, numerous respected critics and art historians have written about the art of Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić, and a number of television programmes have been made about his creative work, but none can reveal as much as opinion of a three year old child. A three-year-old girl once saw several drawings by Radoičić at her grandmother’s house, and after several months, when visiting her grandmother’s office, the little girl pointed a finger towards a children’s book illustrated by Radoičić, recognizing his work among dozen of others, and exclaimed “Look, it’s Vojo!”. This little anecdote reveals Radoičić as a great artist whose illustrations for children are memorable and unique and most clearly explains the reasons why his work is being nominated for the 2007 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award: Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić creates children’s illustrations in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren, it is obvious from his work that he is illustrating for a child within him and children who understand his world of illustrations. Finally, Vjekoslav Vojo Radoičić is known as a creator of a new style in Croatian 20th century painting, “urban naiveté”, astyle that can easily be recognized in his children’s books illustrations.
