Thayer PTO Meeting Minutes- January 5, 2016, 4pm

Attendees: John Craig, Valerie Markworth, Amy Davis, Sarah Crabtree, Jenn Tyger, Sara Wilking, Rebecca Haag-Guyne, Debbie Akery, Monica Vega, Suzie Woodring, Denise Williams, Charity SeGraves, Troy Williams, Jen Crawford, Kaye Phillips, Mrs. Justice

Call to Order: 4:06pm

New Treasurer- Since Mrs. Perez has accepted a position at another school, Mrs. Vega has volunteered to step in as the new Treasurer. Jen Crawford moved to a vote, Mr.Craig seconded. All present voted unanimously, and Mrs. Vega will serve as Treasurer for the remainder of the year.

Treasurer’s Report-Old Total: $2,666.26

Withdrawals- 300.00 for Holiday Crafts

New Total: $2,366.26

New Vice President- The position for vice president is currently available, and Valerie Markworth volunteered to step in as VP. Jen Crawford moved for a vote, and Sara Crabtree seconded. All present voted unanimously, and Valerie Markworth will serve as Vice President for the remainder of the school year.

Old Business:

  • The Dickerson Park Zoo event was reviewed. All who attended enjoyed it. Some donations were received at event to help the PTO’s coverage of the cost .
  • The Holiday craft went well with Paige Snyder as the lead. Good responses were given from parents.

New Busienss:

  • Popcorn Fridayis scheduled for January 29th. Volunteers are needed from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. that morning. A Sign-up sheet was available at the meeting and was given to Valerie Markworthonce all volunteers were noted.
  • Fundraisers-Some concerns were raised regarding our previous fundraiser and are being addressed at a district level.

Upcoming Fundraisers include:

January- Magazine Sales. Reading for Education. This is a PTO fundraiser. Students will have mail-in cards that they can fill in and return for prizes. Direct sales are not necessary unless the students choose to do so. Hand out begins on the January 19th, but all siblings might not receive their information on the same day. Volunteers will be needed the following week to help the younger grades complete the example address on their cards.

February- Smencils Sales. This is a PTO fundraiser. Smencilsare scented pencils that will be available for sale during the Valentine’s holiday Students and parents will be able to purchase smencils and attach a note to be delivered to students or teachers for Valentine’s (much like the Candy Grams many schools do for Valentine’s Day). Once more information is secured, the PTO will send out information on the exact dates that the Smencils will be available for sale. Valerie Markworth will be contacted the localSmencil rep. to order the pencils. We will send out a flyer for parents and students to be able to purchase these items for Valentine’s Day.

March- Dance Recital. This is a school fundraiser. Mrs. Vega will provide a Basics Dance class during the month of January at no cost to students. In February, students will have the opportunity to take a grade-level class for $20 and participate in a Dance Recital scheduled forMarch 3rd. Tickets for the recital may be purchased for $3 per adult or a family for $5. Concessions will be available for sale by the PTO during the event. Notes should be going home with more information on this project the week of January 6th.

April- Carnival. April 1st. This is a PTO and school fundraiser. Students will have the opportunity to play games and purchase concessions. Themed Baskets and a special art project from each class will be on display for a silent auction. We will be discussing this more at the March meeting, and detailed information will be distributed upon completion of the planning process.

  • Book Swap. March 1st - 4th. Jen Crawford and other volunteers will host a Book Swap for all students who wish to participate. Students will bring in their book donations on March 1-2, and volunteers will sort them (i.e., picture books, chapter books, etc.). Students who bring in books for the swap will be able to get books on March 3-4. More information will be sent home at the time of the event.
  • Spelling Bee. March 10th at 4pm. Thayer will host their first spelling bee. Jen Crawford has volunteered to coordinate this event. Students in 3rd-5th grades will be invited to participate in this after-school event. Word lists will be e-mailed to all parents who send in permission slips for their students to participate in this event.
  • New Business- Concerns regarding lunch money and size of meals were expressed by parents in attendance and addressed by appropriate Thayer staff members.
