Class Updates

In Science, students learned about decomposition. They watched a Magic School Bus video. We discussed reasons why organic materials decompose faster than inorganic materials.

We had our summer birthday celebration during lunch today.

In Reading, students continued reading their last National Geographic magazine.

In Writing, students began writing their most memorable memory of third grade to include in their third grade story book.

In Math, third grade was divided into math groups to work on different math concepts.

Class Updates

This morning, fifth graders came to teach students math. They reviewed area and perimeter with many fun and interactive activities.

Students went to an assembly with Billy B. He taught them about the environment.

During our enrichment rotation, students went to Mrs. Talvac to finish working on their habitat boxes.

In Reading, students finished up their literature circles and began reading our final National Geographic magazine.

In Math, third grade was divided into math groups to work on different math concepts.

2013 Play Schedule (Revised)

Class Updates

During our enrichment rotation, students stayed with me to conduct their last experiment with their lunch boxes. Students took a water bottle that was full of hot water and placed it in their lunch box. Students measured the temperature every 10 minutes to see if their lunch box was a good insulator.

Students did buddy reading with first graders. The first graders shared their Powerpoints for their author's tea. Third graders gave feedback to the first graders. They finished their time together by reading books to each other.

In Reading, some literature circles had their final literature circle.

In Math, we continued working with graphs. Students matched data tables to bar graphs. We discussed the similarities and differences of each graph. Students discussed the scales on each graph and reason for why the scale was chosen.

Class Updates

In Social Studies, students learned about the global trade market. Students created a world trade map showing where all of their products are produced and where they are distributed across the world. This is in continuation with our activity on Friday.

This afternoon we had a dress rehearsal for our folktale plays. The students did a phenomenal job! I am so proud of them! You can see their performance Thursday morning. Curtains are at 9:15 in Ms. Smith's room so please arrive before then.

In Math, students took an assessment on finding perimeter when there are unknown side lengths.

Class Updates

In Social Studies, we learned how technology has affected transportation. Students had to pick a product their group was going to produce. They had to determine how they would package their product, where they were going to ship their product and what type of transportation system would be most effective.

In Reading, students watched an interview with the author of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Students discussed the questions the interviewer asked and what information the interviewer learned from the questions she asked. Students shared their journal entry from yesterday with a partner. Their partner interviewed them by asking questions to find out more information about their motivational quote.

Students went to the fourth grades' Wax Museum.

In Math, students created pictographs to represent data from a tally chart.

Class Updates

This morning, we watched a band performance by the fourth and fifth graders.

In Reading, we read different blogs and determined whether they were written to show an opinion, reflect or explain information. Students read some motivational quotes and had to choose one to write about. Students had to explain what the quote means to them, whether they agree or disagree with the author's point of view and discuss what their point of view of this idea is.

During our enrichment rotation, students went to Ms. Smith's room to practice their plays.

In Math, we solved word problems for area and perimeter when there were unknown sides.

In Writing, students practiced their plays.

In Reading, we read a transcript of an interview with E.B. Lewis and watched an interview of him. We discussed how the interviews were similar and different. We brainstormed the key details the interviewer was trying to determine when they were conducting the interview.

In Math, we continued working with perimeter. We looked at different shaped rectangles that have the same area but have different perimeters.

Class Updates

During our enrichment rotation, students stayed with me. Students conducted their first experiment with their lunch boxes. They put a frozen water bottle in their lunch box and measured the change in temperature to determine if their lunch box kept the frozen water bottle frozen and was a good insulator.

We had our last lesson of Junior Achievement today. Students created their own bank. They learned how to write a check and a deposit slip, and balance a check book. Students took turns being a newspaper store, restaurant and bank to learn about the different roles they have with money.

In Reading, we read The Other Side. Students identified the state of minds of each character and how they changed throughout the book.

In Math, we continued working with perimeter. We looked at different shaped rectangles that have the same perimeter. Students looked at patterns of rectangles with the same perimeter but have different dimensions.

Today was Career Day. Students heard presentations from a Lawyer for the Comptroller of the Currency and Cabin John firefighters. Students really enjoyed these presentations and had a lot of fun learning about these careers.

Mrs. Talvac will be working with students to research habitats. Students will create a habitat in a shoebox. Ms. Smith will be creating two short folktale plays with the students.

Thank you to all of the parents who stopped by during our Science Fair today! Students did such a great job explaining their experiments and answering questions. I am so proud of them!

Third graders have displayed their Science Fair boards in the Media Center for tonight's Science Fair of the 4th and 5th graders. Please note that the third graders will not be present to explain their boards during the evening event.
