Welcome to the 4-H WalkNJ Point-to-Point Challenge!

Captains: Please read the following information. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Terri Yost at or 973-285-8300 x3 OR Annette Devitt at or 856-769-0090.

  1. Talk to your 4-H club about participating in the challenge. This would be great to do as a club activity. 4-H teams should have at least 5 members and at least 50% of the team must be 4-H youth to participate in the 4-H challenge.
  2. Decide when you will participate in the challenge. The timeframe for the 2010 4-H challenge is any 8-week period between now and September 11.
  3. Select a team captain. This can be a leader or member. This would be a great Teen Leadership project. The team captain is responsible for registering the team, keeping track of members’ progress, and submitting final forms.
  4. Team registration forms are due by July 11. We do have some pedometers this year. We will distribute them to the first 250 people registered who do not already have one. Registration forms include the Team Registration Form and an Individual Registration Form for each participant. Forms should be sent to Terri Yost, 4-H Program Associate, RCE of Morris County, PO Box 900, Morristown, NJ 07963. Fax: 973-605-8195.
  5. Pick a date to start your program. Remember: Your 8 weeks must be between now and September 11.
  6. Decide which day of the week members will report to the team captain. Captains can keep track of members’ progress either on the Team Step/Miles Log form or using the Excel worksheet called Team Tracker.
  7. Start walking! Participants should keep track of the steps they take each day using a pedometer. Participants record their steps on the Individual Step/Miles Log form or on the Individual Tracker Excel form. The Excel form also assigns steps to the number of minutes of participation in various activities. So, instead of wearing a pedometer when playing soccer, a participant can input the number of minutes into the Excel form and it will tell the step equivalent. For example, playing soccer for 30 minutes equals 4,580 steps. Participants can also track their steps on the Walk NJ Point-to-Point web site at

rutgers.edu/walking_program/ Encourage participants to walk their normal amount of steps for the first week so they can get a baseline for their average number of steps. Then they can expand their number of steps during the following weeks.

  1. To keep on track you might want to schedule a weekly time for your team to walk together. Another idea is to set up a “Mid-Challenge Boost” to get together as a team to support each other.
  2. At the end of the 8 weeks, send a Wrap-up Form for each participant and a copy of your Team Tracker Form back to Terri Yost, 4-H Program Associate, RCE of Morris County, PO Box 900, Morristown, NJ 07963. Fax: 973-605-8195.
  3. The final step: come celebrate your team’s success at the state-wide celebration in October. More information to follow.

We hope you will enjoy Walk NJ Point-to-Point
