Field Marshal Duties

Thank you for volunteering to be a Field Marshal for BESA!

Field Marshals are there to assist with making the matches safe and enjoyable for referees, players, coaches and the spectators. Field Marshals should recognize and resolve issues before they arise as well answering questions and providing directions. You should be as helpful as possible as you are representing BESA.

Your very presence on the fields, with your smiling face, is a reminder that we’re here for the kids, and that’s powerful.

  • During the games, be visible, keep moving and be where the referees can see you.
  • Remind parents to move away from the touch/goal line if they are too close due to safety issues. Monitor spectators conduct at all times.
  • Walk your fields and surrounding area to show a presence; this will deter some situations from even starting. Walk along parents’ sidelines. If a fan becomes agitated a good technique is to stand next to them and see if they calm down once they realize you're there.
  • If a spectator becomes unruly, wait for a stop in play. Get the referee’s attention and explain the situation. The referee will speak to the head coach of the spectator’s team and allow the head coach to speak with the unruly spectator. The referee makes the decision if a spectator is to be removed from the game site.
  • Immediately report to BESA age group commissioner of an extreme situation with coaches or spectators.
  • If serious injury occurs, call 911 if necessary
  • Do not get involved in physical or out of control confrontations. Contact Age Group Commissioner or call the authorities immediately.
  • Remember, you are there to assist the referees and monitor the conduct of parents and spectators to report their actions. At any time you do not feel safe or comfortable remove yourself immediately from the area and call authorities if warranted.
