/ Thai massage was originally developed in Thailand by an East Indian doctor who was a friend and personal physician to the historic Buddha. It is a core component of traditional Thai medicine and is believed to have roots an Ayurvedic (science of life) medicine. It is a science of manipulative therapy that works through adjustments and stimulation of the body. The practitioner uses thumbs, fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet during the course of treatment. It incorporates gentle rocking, rhythmic compressions, deep stretches, sophisticated range-of-motion maneuvers, and pressure point work. The influence of yoga practice is also apparent in the positions and stretching movement that Thai massage is famous for.
Thai Massage goes beyond the top layer of muscle down into the mechanical functions of the body. It addresses deep muscle and joint tension, mobility, nerves, muscles, and ligaments. Further, it facilitates optimal flow of energy (Sen) throughout the body. It is traditionally done on a mat on the floor with the client wearing loose, comfortable clothing. It has often been describes as feeling like someone “doing yoga on you with full body pressure points.”
“After I have assisted many people in the healing process I now desire to make time to train others to do the same. I want to teach my students to be able to give therapeutic Thai massage, and also help the people they treat pay more attention to and better understand the significance of their aches and pains. I want to teach others to help heal people, as I do, to better help others. Here, we not only teach massage. We also have astretching and home therapy clinic to teach students to help people heal faster.” - Parpriorn (Orn) Chakkapark, Instructor and President, Thai Healing Therapy. /

Thai Medical Massage

By Parpriorn (Orn) Chakkapark

Thai Massage is an ancient form of therapeutic bodywork practiced for over 2,500 years in Thailand. It was originally developed by an East Indian doctor who was a friend and personal physician to the historic Buddha.

Thai massage is a core component of traditional Thai medicine and is believed to have roots an Ayurvedic (science of life) medicine. It is a science of manipulative therapy that works through adjustments and stimulation of the body. Practitioners use thumbs, fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet during the course of treatment, incorporating gentle rocking, rhythmic compressions, deep stretches, sophisticated range-of-motion maneuvers, and pressure point work. The influence of yoga practice is also apparent in the positions and stretching movement that Thai massage is famous for.

In Thai medical theory, the body’s vital life energy flows along channels called Sen. This energy powers all the physical, metal and emotional processes which will only function normally when energy supply matches demand. The Chinese call this energy “Qi” and the Indians call it “Prana.” Any imbalance or blockage in the distribution of this energy can cause pain and disease. When the system is working well and energy distribution is balanced, you feel happy, relaxed, energetic and free from stiffness and pain.

There are 72,000 energy (sen) lines running through our bodies; Thai massage focuses on the main sen channels. Careful application of pressure along these channels helps to release any energy blockages and stagnation. Pressing and stretching muscles makes them more receptive to this flow. When working the sen lines, therapists also treat the nervous system, tendons & ligaments, muscles, blood flow, and lymphatic systems.

Prior to receiving massage, clients receive a soothing footbath while sipping hot Thai ginger tea.Thai massage is traditionally done on a cushioned mat on the floor with the client wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Pillows are also used for support. Sessions run from 30 minutes to two hours. The longer sessions provide enough time to complete all major sen lines and clear a client’s whole system.

Starting in a supine position, the therapist starts working up the sen energy lines of legs and arms with slow and moderately firm palm and thumb pressure, using body weight to apply the pressure. Massage is performed slowly and with a rhythmic flow. Enhanced energy flow helps alleviate common problematic conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, headaches, digestive difficulties, menstrual problems, and stress-related conditions.
