SEDIMENTOLOGY LAB 2

Exercise 1

Textural maturity of sediment and sedimentary rocks.

Goal:

  1. Grow familiar with analyzing textural maturity in sediment and sedimentary rocks.
  2. Begin thinking about the type of process and its influence on the depositional rate- both of which are responsible for textures you observe.

Instructions:

Classify samples 1-6 according to textural maturity.

  1. Sample AF10:

Textural Classification:

Would you say deposition occurred in a low energy environment or moderately high energy environment?

Would you say deposition occurred rapidly with little to no reworking of sediment on the bed, or slowly with plenty of reworking? Why? Note: Reworking tends to winnow out finer grains trapped by large grains on the bed, ultimately coarsening the bed.

  1. Sample AF17

Classification:

Would you say deposition occurred in a low energy environment or moderately high energy environment?

Would you say deposition occurred rapidly with little to no reworking of sediment on the bed, or slowly with plenty of reworking? Why? Note: Reworking tends to winnow out finer grains trapped by large grains on the bed, ultimately coarsening the bed.

  1. Sample AF26
