Description: The fundamental purpose of the Geometry course is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. This course includes standards from the conceptual categories of Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

Instruction will focus on six critical areas: (1) establish criteria for congruence of triangles based on rigid motions; (2) establish criteria for similarity of triangles based on dilations and proportional reasoning; (3) informally develop explanations of circumference, area, and volume formulas; (4) apply the Pythagorean Theorem to the coordinate plane; (5) prove basic geometric theorems; and (6) extend work with probability.

Goals/Standards:This course is designed to meet the guidelines set forth by the state of California and the Los Angeles Unified School District. It is aligned to the new California standards, or Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and requires the teacher and student to follow a strict and fast-paced agenda. Students will also continue to engage in the eight mathematical practices employed in previous mathematics courses.

Tests/Quizzes: Make-up tests and quizzes are given during nutrition or after school. If there is a problem, let me know to reschedule at another time. Mandatory tutoring will be in place for those who score less than 70% on quizzes.

Classwork is worth 10 points each. It cannot be made up if absent.

Warm-Ups: You are expected to start immediately on your warm-up. They will be posted on the boardat the beginning of the period.

Teacher’ Tip:

1) As soon as you feel like you are falling behind or there was something about the lecture you didn’t understand come and see me after school.

2) It is a lot easier to give up than seek help. If you are at the point of giving up, don’t be scared to tell me. We will try and come up with a plan.

3) Exchange phone numbers with a classmate. You can call each other for help or find out the homework assignment.
