Welcome back! I am excited to have you in my class and look forward to having a successful semester.

Why study for the ACT?

ACT Preparation is a course designed to offer students opportunities to increase their current ACT scores in order to increase their post-secondary opportunities.

The ACT is a college entrance exam created by ACT Inc. The test is meant to indicate how you’ll do with college level work by testing your ability on skills that are deemed necessary for college. The ACT tests skills in four areas of your high school curriculum: English, Math, Reading, and Science (in that order). There is also an optional Writing Test, in which you compose a persuasive essay on a theoretical school situation. These areas form the foundation of a typical student’s curriculum in both high school and college.

The ACT is not an intelligence test, and it’s not an indicator of how successful you will be in life. This course strengthens your skills in every content area, but will allow you to focus on the areas you need to work on to boost your score.

Along with ACT preparation, this class will also cover financial literacy and college planning. During these units we will discuss financial responsibility to preparation for college admissions.

How does ACT Preparation connect to my future?

ACT Preparation is a very important class for students that are college-bound. Students will gain valuable knowledge that will help them become successful college students in the future. Students will research several careers that fall within their career interests in order to plan for your future. Students will discover post-secondary interests as we look into college, technical school, or entering the workforce. Students will learn how to market themselves to employers in order to beat out their competition in the workforce. Students will also learn how to be the best employee possibly by demonstrating a variety of employability skills.

Rules: (please read your student hand book for a list of school-wide rules)

  • Respect yourself and others
  • Be prepared to learn
  • Work when it’s time to work

All school rules will be enforced. This includes rules regarding uniform, cell phones and other electronic devices.

Discipline Policy: (Again, please refer to your student manual)

When you break a rule, the following steps will be taken:

  • First Offense: The student will be asked to fill out a self-discipline referral. I will have a student conference with the student regarding their behavior.
  • Second Offense: The student will fill out a second referral, and then copies of both referrals will be mailed home to inform parent of student’s behavior.
  • Third Offense: After the student fills out their third referral, I will fill out an office referral and send student to office for discipline.

I reserve the right to send any student immediately to the office, if the offense is serious.

Supplies you will need to bring everyday to class:

  • Paper
  • TI graphing calculator or any calculator you plan on using during test
  • mechanical pencils

Attendance:

Your attendance is important to your success in this class. You are expected to be on time. Please refer to your student handbook regarding Davidson’s tardy and absence policy.

Make-Up Work:

If you are absent you need to communicate with me regarding your make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make–up work and turn it in within 3 days of the absence. Be prepared. Please check my school website for assignments. Not completing make-up work will affect your grade. You will have a “1” for that assignment until that grade is made up. Make up test will typically be completed Wednesdays afterschool.

Grading Policy:

Daily Points System

Every student will start out each day with 20 daily points. These points come from being to class on time and in your seat and working on the bell ringer before the bell rings, homework is completed, conduct and behavior is acceptable, student participates in class discussion and assists peers in assignments. Every time a student does not fulfill one of the daily tasks five points will be deducted for that task. At the end of the week the points will be totaled and a one hundred (100) point classroom participation grade will be given. We will have a final Project which will count 20% of your final grade.

Assignments/Assessments:

There will be projects and tasks during this course. Most of these will be completed during class time. Therefore you attendance is very important.

I know we will have a successful year and I am looking forward to teaching you.
