Approval / The Terms of Reference were approved at meeting 2014/1 on 20 March 2014; Updated under approval of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) on 12 March 2015.
Purpose / To advise the University on reconciliation issues and community engagement for the local and regional areas, encompassing all domestic campuses.
Responsibilities / 1. To provide strategic advice to the University on reconciliation issues, including those related to initiatives, access, services and activities, and employment.
2. To provide advice and strategies to the University to ensure an inclusive environment for staff and students.
3. To provide guidance and advice regarding the University’s collaboration with partner institutions and members of the community.
4. To provide guidance and advice to the Reconciliation Action Plan Implementation Committee regarding implementation of the actions of the Reconciliation Action Plan, and community engagement, internal and external to the University.
5. To provide an annual report to the University.
Membership / The Advisory Group comprises:
· A senior member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community (1 member)
· Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) (1member)
· Dean of Students (1member)
· Director, Ngunnawal Centre (1 member)
· Director, University of Canberra College (1member)
· A Faculty Dean (1 member)
· Members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community (3 members)
· A member of the Ngunnawal Aboriginal community (1 member)
· President, University of Canberra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students’ Association (1 member)
Total membership is 11 members.
Alternate Members:
· The Advisory Group may not make arrangements for alternate members.
Co-opted Members:
· The Committee may make arrangements to co-opt members with specific expertise for a specific period of time.
Method of Appointment / · A senior member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community (Chair) selected by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) after receiving advice from the current membership
· Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) ex-officio
· Dean of Students ex-officio
· Director, Ngunnawal Centre ex-officio
· Director, University of Canberra College ex-officio
· A Faculty Dean selected by the Chair of the Advisory Group after receiving advice from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) ex-officio
· Members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community selected by the Chair of the Advisory Group
· A member of the Ngunnawal community nominated by the United Elders Ngunnawal Council
· President, University of Canberra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students’ Association
Chair:
· The Chair is appointed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) for a two (2) year period.
Deputy Chair:
· Where the Chair is not available, a Deputy Chair will be provided from amongst the membership.
Term of Appointment / External membership is for a period of two years. Where appropriate, half the nominated representatives should be changed each year.
Re-appointment can only be for one additional term though members can serve further, non-consecutive terms.
Secretariat Arrangements / The Secretary will be provided by Academic Quality and Development, Teaching and Learning.
The Secretariat will provide administrative support to the Advisory Group including preparing and distributing agendas and papers, maintaining minutes of meetings of and the website, and collating reports and associated material as part of the official University records.
Agendas and associated documentation will normally be distributed a week prior to the meeting. Except with express permission of the Chair, late papers will not be accepted.
Quorum / There are no quorum requirements.
Schedule of Meetings / The Advisory Group normally meets 3 times per calendar year.
The Advisory Group should not meet unless there is sufficient business to warrant a meeting being held.
Special meetings may be called if warranted.
Evaluation and Review / The Advisory Group should review its Terms of Reference as part of its normal course of business, with amendments to be approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education).
