Pittville Student Village Contemporary Sculpture Competition

Competition rules and restrictions
- The competition is open to alumni of the University of Gloucestershire and all predecessor or linked colleges.
- The theme for the sculpture is “The History of the School of Art & Design, Pittville, Cheltenham”.
- The sculpture can be made of any permanent (to last at least 50 years) material and there is no restriction on style, but a site specific element would be considered favourably. Content needs to be sensitive to a public environment.
- The sculpture will be located at the Pittville Student Village, and it will be situated in an outside space that is a university and student friendly environment.
- Entry to the competition is free.
- Applications must be submitted to midnight Thursday 1December 2016. Late applications will not be accepted after this date.
- All submitted applications and digital photographs are non-returnable.
- The sculpture must be completed by 15November 2017.
- The sculpture must be fully installed by 15 December 2017.
- Applications should include the following information: completed application form, digital photographs of your idea for a sculpture (maximum 3 images, JPEG or PDF images, max 10MB each).
- The winning entrant will be required to sign a contract of engagement.
- All applications to follow the site plan and measurement restrictions and guidelines.
- Funding is available up to a maximum amount of £20,000 exclusive of VAT, to include installation costs. The contractors used for the installation of the sculpture must be approved by the University of Gloucestershire in advance of installation.
- Funding will be released in staged payments.Funding is to be used solelyfor time andmaterials and all other costs relating to the sculpture and for no other purpose.Delivery and installation costs are to be met from the funding.
- If the artist is VAT registered they will need to provide VAT invoices to the university and account correctly for their own VAT liabilities in accordance with HMRC requirements.
- Funding will be paid via staged instalments, as follows:
- First instalment of 33% after 3 months, after satisfactory inspection of work carried out to date and submission of relevant invoices. Where funding is required to meet the costs of materials in advance of staged payments, this will need to be separately negotiated with the University prior to the purchase of the materials;
- Second instalment of 34% on satisfactory completion of the sculpture following inspection by the university,
- Third and final instalment of 33% on satisfactory installation of the sculpture following inspection by the university.
- Funding payments will be made by direct bank transfer to a UK bank account in the name of the competition winner within 14 days of each satisfactory stage inspection.
- Once staged payments have been made, ownership of the materials and work to date and intellectual property rights will pass to the university. The university reserves the right to reference the artist for publicity and marketing purposes.
- The University of Gloucestershire has the right to recover funding if the sculpture is not on schedule to required dates, completion and installation deadlines are not met, or if the finished sculpture is not to original specification.
- The sculpture and installation must comply with the University of Gloucestershire Health and Safety policy. Any sculpture or installation that does not comply can be rejected or removed at any time.
- The sculpture must be created in line with all relevant University policies, including the equality and diversity policy.
- The University of Gloucestershire reserves the right to move the sculpture to another location, or to sell the sculpture as it sees fit.
- The University of Gloucestershire reserves the right to remove the sculpture if it is deemed to be offensive at any point.
- The university does not accept any liability arising from the competition or the sculpture.
- The decision of the University of Gloucestershire is final and no correspondence will be entered into concerning rejected applications/sculptures.
