Core purpose of the Break/Lunch supervisor

Working as part of a team to be responsible for the supervision of students on the school site. The post holder will be expected to supervise students, making their safety and security the main priority, in the canteen and around the school.

Core purpose of

  • Supervision and control of the students in the canteen area.
  • Supervision and control of students in the school buildings and around the school grounds.
  • Associated ancillary duties

Key responsibilities

Supervision and control of students in the canteen, including:

  • Organising the queue and entrance of students into the canteen and ensuring good behaviour and a calm atmosphere.
  • Dealing with any unacceptable behaviour that may occur by intervening and calling for assistance, reporting incidents to the appropriate person according to the severity of the incident.
  • Encouraging social skills and good table manners, ensuring safety with knives and forks. Ensuring that students tidy/clear up in a satisfactory manner.
  • Assist in cleaning up spillages when food is spilt or dropped where such spillages are hazardous to pupils/staff.
  • Sharing responsibility with other midday Supervisors and /or teachers for the maintenance of order and discipline in the cafeteria.

Supervision and control of students in the grounds and other school premises including:

  • Supervision of pupil’s activities and behaviour, ensuring their safety and well-being, providing emotional support where necessary.
  • Preventing bullying, being aware of changes in friendships, encouraging socialising etc.
  • Discouraging dangerous activities. Dealing with any unacceptable or challenging behaviour under the direction and guidelines in operation at the school.
  • Reporting any poor behaviour or breaking of the school rules by students to the member of staff on duty.
  • Ensuring that pupils return to lessons promptly at the end of the lunch period.

Associated Ancillary Duties:

  • Checking toilet areas regularly for signs of students smoking/vandalism, blockage of toilets/wash basins. Reporting any damage to the caretaking staff.
  • Ensuring that any student who suffers accident or injury are dealt with appropriately in accordance with the school’s procedures.
  • Staff room to be cleaned after break i.e dishes loaded into the dishwasher.
  • Lunch hall is cleaned away and prepared at the end of break and lunch duties.

Safeguarding:

  • To have due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and to follow the child protection procedures by the school’s safeguarding policy.

General Responsibilities (all staff):

  1. To perform duties and attend meetings as reasonably required.
  2. To participate in the School's performance management scheme.
  3. To undergo in-service training where required.
  4. To contribute to the school's pastoral system.
  5. To observe and implement current school policies and good practice.
  6. To contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  7. To carry out such particular duties as the Headteacher may reasonably direct from time to time.
