Term 1 – Nursery Rhymes: Mary had a little lamb

Learning Outcome:
Students will be able to recognize and name the baby farm animals.
Target Language:
Baby farm animals: chick, lamb, piglet, calf, duckling
Introduction to Topic:
Circle Time: Register and Songs
Theme Introduction:Stick all the baby farm animals (Attachment 1) up around the classroom before the lesson starts. (Have a few copies of each baby animal so that there is enough for at least 1 per student and keep one set with the teacher.) Put the flashcards of the “Mummy” farm animals (Attachment 1) in the middle of the circle. Show the students the “Mummy” pictures in the circle. Name each farm animal. Tell the students that the “Mummy” farm animals are very sad, because they miss their babies. Tell them that we need to help the mummies to find their babies. Give the students a chance to find 1 baby in the class and sit back in the circle. When the teacher holds up a baby farm animal, the student that has the same picture should put it with the correct mummy. (Name each baby animal as you play this game.) Show the students a picture of Mary (Attachment 3) and tell the students that Mary had a lamb that loved her very much. Put the picture of the lamb with mary and tell the students that this lamb followed Mary everywhere.

Main Activity:
Craft 1: Lamb hand craft - Trace the students hand and let the guardians help you to cut it out. Let the students add cotton wool and a googly eye on the thumb. Sample picture attached. – (Attachment 4)
Craft 2: Mary had a little lamb – Colour or paint the picture of Mary and her little lamb. (Attachment 5)
Craft 3: Baby farm animals mobile – Let the students paint or colour the baby farm animals (Attachment 6) Make a farm animal mobile with chopsticks/straws.
Sensory Play:
Make some gloop (mixing water with cornstarch) in a big tray. Add farm animals, cups and spoons. Let students explore.
Game/Movement Activity:
Hide the baby farm animal pictures in the classroom. Put the pictures of the “Mummy” farm animals in the middle of the carpet. Give the students a chance to find the farm animals and try to put the baby with the correct mummy. Teach them the sounds that farm animals make.
Extension Activity for 2+yrs:
Print a copy of (Attachment 8) for each student. Let them stick stickers on the dotted line to trace the star. Sample picture attached to the lesson. (Attachment 7)
