X International Theatre Festival "Baltic House"

The anniversary X International Theatre Festival Baltic House will take place since September 29 to October 8, 2000.The festival really became one of the most important culture events in St. Petersburg and Russia and was reckoned among significant European festivals.87 theatres from 19 countries took part in the festival with 124 performances for nine years. Such prominent directors of Europe as Eimuntas Niakroshius, Iurii Libimov, Robert Sturua, Rimas Tuminas, Kama Ginkas, Oleg Efremov, Lev Dodin, Ezi Jarocki, Elmo Nuganen became participants of the festival. Due to the "Baltic House" theatre Russia got to know the best creative collectives from Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Poland and other countries.

The "Baltic House - 2000" will go outside St. Petersburg. This festival will be the common for four countries and will take place in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from September 23 to October 1. The theatre wave will roll about three Baltic Republics and give a start to the anniversary festival.

The Tenth International Theatre Festival "Baltic House" will be opened with the performance "The Idiot" of the Russian Drama Theatre of Estonia. The program of the anniversary festival is going to be very saturated and interesting.

Moscow Theatre "Sovremennik" will show the new performance staged by one of the most interesting European directors, laureate of the festival - Rimas Tuminas - "We play ...Schiller!". This is the author version of the Schiller'splay "Mary Stuart". The best actors of the legendary theatre - Marina Neelova, Elena Iakovleva, Igor' Kvasha and others - play in the performance.

One more constant participant of the festival - the director, whose name is known far outside Russia - Kama Ginkas will also show his new work - "Black Monk" after A.P. Chekhov.

Playgoers will have a unique opportunity to see the open rehearsal of the new project "Othello" within the workshop led by outstanding director of the present, reiterated laureate of the festival Eimuntas Niakroshius.

Leading theatre collectives from Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Netherlands, France, Finland and Russia are among the participants as well. The competition program also includes the best performances of St. Petersburg theatres.

Non-competition program must also be rather vast and diverse. Performances of the experimental theatre groups will be shown within the framework of the project "Under the Roof of the Baltic House". These are "Farces" Theatre (artistic director Viktor Kramer), Experimental Stage led by Anatolii Praudin, Formal Theatre of Andrei Moguchii. They now live and work in the "Baltic House" Theatre.

The "Baltic House - 2000" will be interesting not only due to the performances. There will be the exhibition of well- known English theatre photo-artist Ken Reinolds.

Scholar conference "Theatre and Time. Present Day in the Mirror of the Theatre" will be conducted within the framework of the festival in conjunction with the Executive Committee of the International Critics Association. The prominent critics of the world theatre will take part in it. The round-table discussion will be held in the Internet-Class by the results of the seminar-dialogue "Theatre Advertisement in Internet". The Netherlands Theatre Institute will organize a three-days seminar on marketing.

It is planned that the "Baltic House - 2000" will take place not only in St. Petersburg. It may be common for four countries and festivals with the same name will go off in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Thus the theatre wave would roll about three Baltic Republics and give a start to the festival in St. Petersburg. The festival "Baltic House - Latvia", "Baltic House - Lithuania" and "Baltic House - Estonia" will take place in late September. The final performances will start being shown in St. Petersburg on September 29. The performances will be selected by the Expert Council including the leading theatre figures from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and St. Petersburg.

Each festival will have its own characteristic features. The common would be participation of the best national performances and performances from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, St. Petersburg, Moscow and a couple of performances from Western Europe included in the repertoire of the "Baltic House - St. Petersburg".

A special group will be organized to unite theatre workers and journalists from the Baltic countries, St. Petersburg, Moscow and guests from Western Union. The group moving from one country to another would have a possibility to see the best theatre performances. Free discussions will be held in the frame-works of the festivals. They must help to consider the local performances in the context of the all-European tendencies of the theatre development.

"Baltic House - Latvia" is planned to be held in Riga in conjunction with the New Theatre Institute of Latvia where the show of the best Riga theatre will take place.

Kaunas will be the place of the "Baltic House - Lithuania". It is traditionally theatre city. Here audiences will be able to see performances on seven theatre stages. Simultaneously celebrating of two theatre holidays will take place in Vilnius. These are 60th anniversary of the National Theatre of Lithuania and the 10th anniversary of the Small Theatre. The latter is of the same age with the festival and is the constant participant of the "Baltic House".

"Baltic House - Estonia" Festival will be in Tallinn on the basis of the City Theatre and the Russian Drama Theatre of Estonia.

Creation of the common advertisement-information space must be one of the important elements of the project. Necessary polygraphic production must be released for each festival. The concluding booklet will elucidate the festivals in details.

The organizers guess that the project "Baltic House - 2000" will further making new contacts, creation of a theatre system for the countries of the Baltic Sea Region. The festival must be a real donation in the development of culture exchange between these countries.
