TENSES : WRITE- UP AND EXERCISES

The tense of a verb in a sentence helps us express the time when the action took place. There are three tenses of the verb- the present, past and future. These can further be classified into the simple, continuous and perfect tenses.

1.  SIMPLE TENSES

a)Simple Present Tense

It snows in Alaska.

I watch television every day.

I visit my cousin all the time

(In general, the simple present expresses events or situations that exist always, usually, habitually; they exist now, they have existed in the past, and probably will exist in the future.)

b)Simple Past Tense

Itsnowedyesterday.
Iwatchedtelevision last night.
Ivisitedmy cousin last year.

(At one particular time in the past, this happened. It began and ended in the past.)

c)Simple Future Tense

Itwill snowtomorrow.
Iwill watchtelevision tonight.
Iwill visitmy cousin later.
(At one particular time in the future, this will happen.)

2.  PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS TENSES

a)Present Progressive Tense

Heis sleepingright now.

Suman is singing now.

(He is asleep at the moment. His sleepis in progress at the present time, and probably will continue.(at least for a while)

b)Past Progressive Tense

Hewas sleepinglast night.

They were watching movie yesterday.
(He went to sleep at 10:00 last night. I arrived at 11:00. He was still asleep. His sleep began before andwas in progress at a particular time in the past. It probably continued, at least for a while)

c)Future Progressive Tense
Hewill be sleepingwhen we arrive.

They will be reading till late night.

(He will go to sleep at 10:00 tomorrow night. We will arrive around 11:00. The action of sleeping will begin before we arrive, and itwill be in progress at a particular time in the future. His sleep will probably continue,at least for a while)

3.  PERFECT TENSES

a)Present Perfect Tense

have/has+ past participle form of the verb

Ihavealreadyeaten.

She has finished her homework.

(I finished eating something before now. The exact time is not important.)


b)Past Perfect Tense

had+ past participle form of the verb

Ihadalreadyeatenwhen they arrived.

She had finished her homework before she went out.


(First I finished eating. Later they arrived. My eating was completelyfinished before another time in the past)

c)Future Perfect Tense

Will/shall +have+ past participle form of the verb

Iwillalreadyhave eatenwhen they arrive.

She will have finished her homework

(First I will finish eating. Later they will arrive. My eating will be completely finished before another time in the future.)

4.  PERFECT PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS TENSES

A) Present Perfect Progressive Tense

HAS/HAVE+ been+ ing form of the verb

Ihave been studyingfor two hours.
(Event in progress: studyingWhen? Before now, up to nowHow long? For two hours)

B)Past Perfect Progressive Tense

Had+ been+ ing form of the verb

Ihad been studyingfor two hours before my friends came.
(Event in progress: studyingWhen? Before another event in the past. How long? For two hours)

C)Future Perfect Progressive Tense

Will/shall +have+ been+ ing form of the verb

Iwill have been studyingfor two hours by the time you arrive.
(Event in progress: studyingWhen? Before another event in the futureHow long? For two hours)
