Tennis Study Guide mjw07

History - Mary Outerbridge brought tennis to the U.S. in 1878.

Skills –

  • Grip – handshake
  • Forehand – Hitting the ball on racket side of the body. Pivot, racket back and waist high, step to ball with opposite foot, level swing, contact ball out in front of body on racket side, follow through to target and ready position.
  • Backhand – Hitting the ball on non-racket side of body. Pivot, racket back and waist high, switch grip (to keep racket perpendicular to the ground on contact with the ball), 2nd hand can be added to grip for control and power, step to ball with opposite foot, level swing, contact ball out in front of body on non-racket side, follow through to target and ready position(switch grip back).
  • Serve – Toss is straight up and down, out in front of the hitting side, it must be higher than the extended racket. Draw racket up and back into “back scratch” position, opposite hip is toward net, elbow high, contact ball at extension, follow through to target.

Scoring/Game/Set/Match- “Love” is zero. There are four points to win the game. The scoring goes: Love, 15, 30, 40, Game. A player has to win by two, so if you are tied at 40-40, scoring continues like this: 40-40 = “Deuce”, if the server scores the next point it is called “advantage in” or “add in”, if the receiver scores the next point it is called “advantage out” or “add out”. If the same player scores the second point after “Deuce”, that is “Game”. If after “add in or out” the opponent scores it goes back to “Deuce”.

You must win 6 games, winning by two (6-4, 7-5), to win a “Set”. You need to win 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 “Sets” to win the “Match”.

Games - Love, 15, 30, 40, Game.

Set - win 6 Games, ahead by two games

Match - win 2 out of 3, or 3 out of 5 Sets

Starting the game/match:

-Flip a coin or spin the racket to decide who serves first/who gets which side of court.

Serving:

-The server serves for the entire game. The opponent serves the next game, …

-The server must be behind the baseline during the serve. (Stepping on or over the baseline would be a Foot Fault.)

-The first serve is always from the right side of the center mark, after a point is scored the serve is from the left, …

-The serve must be hit from a toss and not touch the ground.

-The serve must always land in the diagonal service box to be legal.

-A serve that fails to follow the above rules is termed a Fault.

-A serve that hits the line is in (good).

-A serve that hits the net, but lands in the correct service box is a LET. This means that the serve does not count (not even as a fault), just re-serve.

-The server always gets two attemptsto make a good serve. If the server Double Faults, the opponent gets the point and the server switches side and serves for the next point.

-The server always calls out the score (servers’ score first) before serving.

Scoring points: (the opponent gets the point if:)

-The player serves two consecutive faults

-The player does not return the ball in play before it bounces twice

-The player returns the ball so that it hits the ground outside the court, hits the ground on their side of the net

-The receiver returns the SERVE before it bounces

-In doubles, both players touch the ball when returning it
