Altered Book Exhibition

What is an Altered Book?

An “altered book” is a book that has been transformed by creative means into a work of art. Creating altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture.

Entry Specifications:

  • The exhibition is open to anyone. Youth (under 18) may be assisted by adults. One entry per person. Must be a member of DCPL library to enter.
  • Each participant will be given ONE unsellable book that has been donated to the library. It can be picked up at the Adult Reference Desk.Do not use a library book!
  • There areNO RULESabout how to alter your book – you can add to, delete from, cut up, collage, orreconfigure the book – in short, whatever comes to mind.
  • All entries must be submitted no later than April 4th, 2014.
  • Employees of DCPL are encouraged to submit entries.

Delivery of Work: Work may be hand delivered to the Adult Reference Desk at Tenley-Friendship Library or may be mailed to the library. Entries must be accompanied by a completed and signed registration form. All work must be ready for display. TheLibrary has the right to refuse entry to the competition of works that are not suitable for display or for family viewing.

Exhibit/Reception: There will be an opening reception in the Large Conference Room from 4-6:30pm on April 8th.Invite friends and family!! The altered books will then be on display for the month of April in the windows as you enter the library. The Library has the right to display all entries in any manner we see fit.

Liability: DCPL will make every effort to insure the safe handling of entries, but does not assume responsibility for damage or loss.

Reproduction: DCPL reserves the right to reproduce entries for exhibition and publicity purposes and for inclusion in its website, institutional repository and digital library.

Pick up of work: At the end of the exhibit on May 2nd, 2014 work will be available for pick up during operating hours for the two weeks after the exhibit. After those two weeks we will not be able to guarantee the return of your altered book. Identification will be required to pick up your book. Written permission must be provided in advance for someone other than the creator to pick up the work. Mailed in entries will not be returned via mail.
