Ten Guiding Principles of Distance Education

Principle One: Identify students as the driving force behind every decision.

Principle Two: Generate opportunities for students to construct their own knowledge through meaningful and authentic learning experiences.

Principle Three: Provide students with experiences that promote higher order thinking skills. Begin courses with concrete learning experiences and guide the students towards more abstract experiences.

Principle Four: Verbalize student support and feedback.

Principle Five: Provide students with necessary resource materials. Learners should have equal access to the proper materials despite their location.

Principle Six: Establish motivational factors.

Principle Seven: Measure a programs’ success by student achievement.

Principle Eight: Maximize learning in a non-traditional learning environment through the use of media and technology.

Principle Nine: Prepare for the future rather than becoming comfortable with the present.

Principle Ten: Evaluate and revise your programs.
