1.What nurse leader role will you assume? (i.e. nursing director of a facility, unit manager, committee chair, etc.) / I will be assuming the role of Director of Quality Improvement in an acute care hospital setting.
2.What is the interdisciplinary role you will be assuming when you are not acting in the leader role? (i.e physician, pharmacist, social work, administrators from other areas who are not nurses, etc.) Share a couple of the key personality/role traits you will bring to that role and that are supported by the literature or by your personal experience. / When not in a leadership role, I will be assuming the role of a nursing administrator role who may question whether the proposed change strategy aligns with the strategic vision of the health care system takes into consideration whether the proposed change strategy is aligned with the vision and mission statement of the organization and whether it is cost effective, etc.
3.What is the leadership style/theory that you will be using during your role-play as leader? Provide a 1 or 2 sentence description of this style/theory and cite same. / I will be using a transformational and relational leadership style during role play as nursing administrator as described by Marshall (2011) who suggests that this approach engages, informs, and encourages collaboration.
4.What are at least 2 leadership attributes associated with the leadership style/theory you selected and that you will be attempting to bring to your leadership role? Share citations to support these as effective attributes for leaders. / Key traits include being able to “walk the talk” , being able to inspire and motivate others by having a strong vision, showing concern for the needs and feelings of others, and encourages others to utilize independent thinking (Sherman, (2012)
5.Write a concise, but effective statement on what your vision of change is, that you will articulate to your group members. (1 or 2 sentences) / My vision for change to improve communication in the nursing handoff process is to promote organizational awareness through education and implementations of a quiet zone for patient handoff to eliminate distractions that can cause a breakdown in communication.
6.Share at least 2 conflict resolution strategies you will be prepared to employ during your leadership role. Share citations to support these as effective conflict resolution strategies. / Two approaches that I plan to use as a conflict resolution:
1. Provide ample opportunity for people to express their views, listen carefully, acknowledge differences of opinion (Marshall, 2011)
2. Promote engagement of alternative ideas to promote positive conflict resolution (Marshall, 2011).
7.Share at least 2 approaches you will employ during your leadership role to inspire/motivate the change. Cite these with appropriate support from the literature. / Two transformational leadership approaches that I plan to use to inspire and motivate team members include valuing what people bring to the table as health care leaders (educators, informatics, administrators), encourage their participation, and providing the resources for them to succeed (Marshall, 2011). Resources may include time, a supportive culture, leadership support, and an opportunity to be part of a change initiative dedicated to improving patient care, money and people resources.
