Template for Bud, Not Buddy Argument Essay

This template is for a traditional five paragraph essay with an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Introduction paragraph:

●Start with a “hook” statement, something to grab the reader’s attention. Students were given a list with suggestions for hook statements.

●Provide the reader with background knowledge about the topic, in this case, Bud, from Bud, Not Buddy.

●Make a statement containing the argument and the counterargument. In this case, thrive vs. survive.

●Make a claim. Ex.: Bud uses his rules to help him thrive in life. OR: Bud uses his rules to help him survive in life. (Students may only choose one. You cannot claim that Bud used his rules to thrive and survive.)

Body Paragraph #1:

●Tell the reader about the first rule you’re using (what is the rule and at what was going on in the story when you learned about the rule).

●Provide text evidence that shows Bud using the rule. This needs to provide context for the reader. It should be easy to understand what was taking place when Bud applied this rule to his life. This should be three or four sentences.

●Explain in your own words how Bud using this rule helped him to thrive or survive (it must support your original claim).

Body Paragraph #2:

●Tell the reader about the second rule you’re using (what is the rule and at what was going on in the story when you learned about the rule).

Body Paragraph #3:

●Tell the reader about the third rule you’re using (what is the rule and at what was going on in the story when you learned about the rule).

Conclusion:

●Restate the rules that were used in the three body paragraphs. So that you don’t sound repetitive, don’t phrase the rules in exactly the same way that you stated them in the body paragraph.

●Write a couple of sentences that tie everything together. Make clear connections between your claim, the rules, and the evidence.
