A message from the Minister

In 2005, a unique collaboration of NSW research institutes, organisations and individuals from across the cardiovascular workforce was formed with the support of the NSW Government and the Heart Foundation. This Virtual Institute was called the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN).

CVRN is distinctive; it involves not only medical and scientific researchers of heart disease, but also researchers and clinicians in stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. The Network is a pivotal point in drawing together eminent and developing researchers and providing them with grants and collaborative opportunities that lead to better health. In particular CVRN aims to facilitate research outcomes which will translate into real health outcomes to help relieve the burden of cardiovascular disease, an initiative strongly supported by the NSW Government.

In conjunction with CVRN, I now wish to recognise the achievements of both a senior individual who has made outstanding contributions to scientific/medical research in the cardiovascular and related diseases disciplines and an early to mid career researcher who is a rising star in cardiovascular research, to encourage younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding senior achievers.

I am extremely pleased to announce the opening of nominations for the Ministerial Awards for Cardiovascular Research 2016. These annual awards recognise and celebrate the dedication and achievements ofone of New South Wales most gifted researchers and clinicians in cardiovascular disease, including stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. As well as a rising star within the same disciplines.

I encourage you to nominate for these prestigious awards which will be presented at the CVRN Showcase Conference at the View by Sydney at Walsh Bay, on Wednesday, 26 October 2016.

The winners will be selected by a panel of peers. These awards provide an opportunity to celebrate high achievers in NSW who have had a significant and constructive impact on the cardiovascular health of this state and who deserve to be recognised for their contributions to the health of our society.

Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence

Background

The Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence was created in 2011 by the Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research in conjunction with the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN) to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to scientific/medical research in the cardiovascular and related diseases disciplines.

This prestigious awardwas established to recognise distinguished researchers for their life-long achievement and contribution to dealing with CVD.

Who can be nominated?

Any senior Scientist, Clinician or Health Services specialist currently working within NSW that has made outstanding contributions to scientific/medical research, has a proven track record of collaborations and evidence of translated successful outcomes.

Selection criteria

Excellence in research achievement in cardiovascular scientific/medical research asshown by track record. This must include, but is not limited to:

-Significant contribution to enhancing the research environment in NSW

-A track record of successful research collaborations

-Successfully translated research outcomes which have contributed to the improvement of human health

Selection procedure

Nominations will be judged by the Ministerial Award Selection Committee (Cardiovascular Research). These include a Ministerial representative, public office holder and representatives from the cardiovascular research community both within NSW and Interstate.

The judging criteria by which the Selection Committee will be assessing the nominations are:

-A demonstrated and distinguished track record of research excellence in medical, clinical or basic science over at least the last ten years based on academic and employment record, cited publications in peer reviewed journals, research and award grant success and other examples of research productivity (20%)

-Contribution to enhancing the research environment in NSW (20%)

-A track record of successful research collaborations (30%)

-Successfully translated research outcomes which have contributed to the improvement of human health (30%)

The degree and value of the contribution, collaborations and research translation rather than merely length of service, is the primary focus of the Selection Committee’s consideration. The selection committee will be guided by the selection criteria.The selection committee will reach their decision solely on the material submitted by the nominees, nominators and the referees.The deliberations of the selection committee will remain confidential.The decisions of the selection committee in the selection of the Award recipient are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Nomination requirements

Nominations may be made by a colleague or peer familiar with the work of the nominee.

Nominations should include:

-Completed nomination form including nominator’s reference and nominator statement.

-A full CV including a list of publications.

-Entries with incomplete documentation will not be considered. Submitted material will not be returned.

-Entries received after the closing date will not be considered.

Renominations

Past nominees may be resubmitted with an update of their achievements since their original nomination.

Referees

If required, the selection committee may contact the Nominator for the names and address of individuals who would be in a position to comment directly on the nominee’s service.

Confidentiality

All nominations are strictly confidential and the information provided will be used only to assist the Selection Committee in considering the merits of the nomination.

Award

All winners of the Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence will receive a framed certificate alongside public and peer recognition at the prestigious CVRN Showcase and Awards Ceremony.

The 2016 ceremony will be held at the View by Sydney at Walsh Bay, on Wednesday 26October.

Closing date

All nominations must be received by 5pm,9 September 2016.

Following receipt, each nomination is thoroughlyresearched and referees are contacted as necessary. When all relevant information has been obtained, the nomination is submitted to the Selection Committee for consideration.

How are recipients told of their award?

The Recipient will be advised in writing of the offer of the award. The name of the successful nominee is published on both the NSW Government Website and the Heart Foundation Website.

Are nominators advised?

Nominators are advised of the outcome of their nomination approximately one week prior to the official Award Ceremony
