the changes produced by these discoveries and
innovations.

The student will understand that
Sequencing / sequencing is the ability to organize items in order of their occurrence in time.
Synthesizing information / synthesizing information is the ability to analyze and combine information from several sources to draw conclusions and/or to create a new presentation of information
Timeline / creating a timeline helps describe and define major innovations and describe the changes produced by these innovations.
Using the internet / knowing how to search for the exact information you want is the key to efficient use of the Internet.


I. Sequence of Activities (Instructional Strategies)

A. Focus/connections/anticipatory set

The teacher will use an overhead projector to display a transparency with the following

list of terms:

T. V., Personal Computer, lap top, cellular phone, Blackberry, iPod, iPhone

The teacher will ask the students to read over the list.

Then the teacher will ask:

“What does each of these items have in common?”

“How do these items relate to World History?”

Allow time for discussion. Responses should include

– each of the items resulted from technological innovations (inventions) of the 20th century.

- each has to do with communication

- innovations are used worldwide and not just in certain areas of the World.

Imagine what your life would be without these items. Which one would you be willing to do without?

Some are new innovations. iPod, iPhone…

How did you feel when you first learned about them? (apprehension, eager to use, read instructions first, self-taught, enroll in instructional classes)

These are probably the same emotions shared by past generations when computers first became available for private use.

B. Instructional activities

(demonstrations, lectures, examples, hands-on experiences, role play, active learning experience, art, music, modeling, discussion, reading, listening, viewing, etc.)

1. Objectives: Students will describe changes resulting from 20th century technological

innovations.

2. Procedures: Students will create a web site, power point, timeline or display board

to describe changes resulting from 20th century technological

innovations.

3. Modeling: The teacher will distribute Handout I (Technological Innovations) to the class and instruct students to circle any of the items which they own.

Allow 2 – 3 minutes for completion.

Students will then be instructed to fold the Handout and wait for the teacher to collect it.

The teacher will use an overhead projector to display the transparency (Technological Innovations Chart) and compile a chart based on students’ Handout I.

C. Guided activity or strategy

The teacher will state, “This week you will be researching changes resulting from technological innovations of the 20th Century. You will work independently and will make a presentation of your findings to the class. Your presentation can be in the form of a web site, power point, display board or time line. Before beginning the assignment the

following steps are recommended:

1. Which technological innovations do I wish to research?

2. What materials or tools will I use to conduct the research?

a. computer – search engines (ask.com; dogpile.com; ______)

b. textbook

c. reference books

d. personal interviews

3. How do I want to present the research?

4. When is the presentation due?”

5. Have you ever created your own web page? My Space?

If so, can you share with the class?

Allow time for students’ questions and/or input.

D. Accommodations/modifications

Students needing modifications may be encouraged to conduct personal interviews and present their finding using a time line.

E. Enrichment

Download web page or power point to a flash stick for class presentation.

Students will work independently on this assignment. A planning worksheet and rubric will be available for each presentation.

Since the end of World War II in 1945, technology has played an essential part in shaping a new global culture. Traditional communication was replaced by an information revolution brought about by computers. This was just the beginning.
