OBJECTIVE:
Students will explain the roles and responsibilities (including confidential record keeping and reporting) of classroom teachers to motivate and manage all students in Secondary programs.

READING:
In the Duplass textbook, read topic 15.

ACTIVITIES:

1.  According to researchers, the top concern of new teachers relates to classroom management. It seems that many come into their first classrooms with questions, the most prominent of which is “Will the students behave, and if they do not, what can I do?” Explain why your students will behave in your class, and if not, what will you do? (This is your preliminary idea. We will develop this further throughout this course.)

2.  The second most common question new teachers ask is, “Will the students like me?” Will your students like you? Why or why not? (Don’t say you “don’t care”…you DO!)

3.  The modern view of classroom management is drastically different from that of the 1800’s and early 1900’s? Why do you feel the modern approach is better (or not)?

4.  How would you define/describe classroom management? What are the goals of classroom management?

5.  In class we stated that YOU are the central issue in classroom management. Some researchers point out that student misbehavior can be caused or prompted by a teacher. Give an example(s) of how a teacher might encourage student misbehavior.

6.  Download and examine a copy of PDE Form 430 Pennsylvania Statewide Evaluation Form for Student Professional Knowledge and Practice. This form will be used as a state-required evaluation tool, completed by your supervisor toward the end of your student teaching experience.

a.  List the points related to classroom management that will be assessed.

b.  What sources will the supervisor examine for tangible evidence that you are meeting these performance indicators?
