Technology Drivers / Key Themes

The key themes identified during the assessment phase of the project that are driving the future

vision for technology in the Legal Division are:

Applications

1)  The Division has industry standard systems, yet many are significantly underutilized compared to other law departments

2)  Given that many systems are industry standard, leverage (where feasible) the key core technologies (iManage, eCounsel, IP Manager) that are currently deployed and improve, as needed, e.g.:

o  Performance and stability

o  Update to latest versions with enhanced functionality

o  Re-configure applications to meet new needs

o  Re-design integration of systems to improve performance.=

3)  Evaluate new systems to address unmet needs identified in the assessment

4)  Enhance tool set to meet critical security and mobility needs

5)  Define policy and usage guidelines related to Legal technology

6)  Develop an overall training strategy to increase utilization and improve effectiveness of technology use

Insight / Visibility

7)  Determine how information (e.g., metrics, Key Performance Indicators, and analytics) should be used strategically by Legal Division management

8)  Assess ways to obtain greater visibility into global legal spend

9)  Assess approaches for improved reporting (including ad hoc)

Complex Budget & Financial Analysis Processes

10)  Custom tools or complex manual processes to support Division (or corporate) needs where other law departments generally use core matter management, eBilling and document management systems

11)  Evaluate ability to simplify current processes and to utilize features inherent within current commercial systems to support simplified processes

Communication and Collaboration

12)  Define strategy for utilizing communications technologies and virtual meeting capabilities

13)  Develop tools for information sharing (specific requests include lawyer lists, parties to contracts, expertise location)

14)  Assess how the Legal portal can be improved to facilitate information delivery to help Legal staff in their day-to-day work

Data Protection & Privilege

15)  Define a strategy for data protection and privilege across all Division systems with options including:

o  Encryption

o  System level security and ethical walls

o  Server store

o  Digital rights management

o  Regional plan

o  Security audits
