Introduction

SWC and WES team did baseline and comprehensive assessment in the aforementioned areas toidentify villages having critical problem related with safe water.

this technical detailed assessment carried out on water points exiting in places where prioritized by comprehensiveand this report deals with WASH assessment, mainly focusing on technical aspect, carried out inUmbaru locality.

Beneficiaries’ selection criteria

The average water consumption per individual is less than 15 litters.

Villages affected by the latest conflict and clashes.

Communities hosting IDPs will be given priority.

Villages with movement of returnees (clear demonstration that displaced are returning).

Places where increased water provision will promote population resilience during future crisis, discouraging coping mechanism such as displacement.

Poor hygiene and sanitation condition.

The kind, type and status of the other nearest water point.

Number of people and livestock served by the water source.

IDPs and returnees registered in OCHA and/or IOM and/or UNHCR lists.

The recommendations of other partners including cluster lead, government offices are among the factors to be taken into consideration to identify the beneficiaries.

Objectives:

Detail elaboration of exiting dysfunctional or partially functional water points, i.e. investigate technical defects, and recommend kind of intervention needed for the water schemes prioritized by previously done comprehensive and baseline assessment.

The main purpose of the technical assessment is to examine the technical feasibility and the needed works to carry out. The assessment will focus on:

Inventory of all available water sources in the vicinity of identified and prioritized villages or cluster ofvillages;

Detailed elaboration of technical defect on exiting water sources;

Detailed elaboration of works required for rehabilitation;

Geographic location of the water points traced and mapped using GPS;

Calculation of average distance from the settlements and the time that it takes for round trips;

Description of purpose and the seasonality of the water source;

Verification of capacity of the water source (whenever possible by pumping test), to estimate thehydrological potential of the water source;

Water quality test at field level carried out for key drinking water quality indicator parameters, mainly for

Coli forms (but whenever there is doubt about the quality, the sample will be collected and analyzed in central water quality laboratories)

Description of existing water sources ownership and management system strength, drawbacks and limitations;

Finally, assessment of the accessibility of water sources by all segments of the communities including minority groups and the possible means of arrangement to make the water source accessible for those poor and vulnerable.

Methodology:

The purpose of the technical detailed assessment is mainly to understand the technical issues related with waterpoints i.e. describing the status of the water points, potential, (including pumping test), waterquality, kind of intervention required, material requirement and design. Furthermore, the number and characters of water user group, water demand as well as quality of water taken in to consideration to describe the details ofeach water points.

we carried out detailed assessment in selected6water points from 07-januray-2016 to 12-january-2016 including meeting with the communities and focusgroup discussion were done to collect basic information regarding the exiting water points, their spatial distribution and technical status, about cause of failure of exiting water schemes and to determine kind of interventions required to reinstate or upgrade the exiting water schemes.

Field observation and measurements were also among the methodologies applied to carry out the assessment.

Through the implementation of previous intervention phases in Umbaru locality as well as numerous group discussions with local communities were held. Either technical, Hygiene and sanitation or information on population, domestic water demand, quality and quantity of water available, water point management and ownership related issues were collected. The methods used for data collection have included:

Field surveys collecting and analyzing data concerning the spatial distribution of different water sources in relation to water demand in the targeted areas.

Focused group discussions and meetings with local communities, local stakeholders, and community representative bodies;

Collection of relevant Information and observation concerning hygienic situation and practices through open discussion
