Sums Stacker
This is a strong math app for 1st-3rd graders, but really supports the child who needs additional time with learning basic addition facts. The challenge is to move around tiles in order to create the correct sum in each stack. What makes this better than a basic math fact review is its ability to help children conceptualize sums. The variety of value representation options (dice, Roman numerals, numbers written in Spanish, fingers, coins…) supports a wide array of learning styles. For the child who needs an additional incentive, you can race to see how quickly you can solve the problem.

Arrays/Multiplication

Motion Math: Wings

Motion Math: Wings is another great app by Motion Math (see Motion Math, Zoom and Hungry Fish). These guys are really into doing it right – they focus on developing number sense, rather than just fact memorization. Wings is about improving mental multiplication and estimating. As your bird is flying you need to direct it quickly to fly over the biggest number. However, the numbers are represented in various ways – rows of dots, clusters of dots, “groups of” dots, a grid, a labeled grid and symbols

Slice It!

Slice It! is a fantastic geometry and spatial reasoning app that helps children understand fractions. You are given a shape and a limited number of lines with which you must create a specific number of smaller shapes. The trick is in getting the shapes to each have the same area. Various levels extend the shelf life of this app and can challenge even the cleverest of adults.

Symmetry Shuffle

Symmetry Shuffle is a good iPad only app that helps children explore spatial reasoning and geometry in a creative way. This app is intricate enough to keep kids learning and entertained for a long time. It uses mini geometry puzzles that require strategic thinking and forethought at the higher levels. By flipping and sliding one shape over another in order to match them up, users must come up with mathematical strategies and solutions

Geoboard

In classrooms, a geoboard is a nifty math manipulative made from wood, evenly spaced nails and rubber bands. The Math Learning Center takes Geoboard virtual in its app for the iPad. Hands-On Math Graph Cubes

Hands-On Math Graph Cubes simulates the use of a set of cubes to build bar graphs. While using the cubes students are given feedback so that they can see logical relationships. Visualization is an effective way to help students understand mathematical reasoning and logic. A benefit derived from using the Graph Cubes is that the cubes can be easily manipulated and therefore good problem solving strategies spontaneously evolve. The concepts studied in this curriculum are the foundations of mathematical development especially in areas that are a part of the data analysis, probability and discrete mathematics curriculum strand. The app provides an interactive Playground where graphs and tables can be created and explored. Student interaction with the device is augmented by the artificially intelligent feedback provided by the software. The instructional approaches that result from creating an open-ended area for free exploration and discovery are exciting. On the Playground students manipulate a supply of virtual cubes to create graphs representing data collected through surveys.
When using Graph Cubes simple gestures are used to drag and drop blocks, placing them in columns to build bar graphs. The author and designer coined the term, “artificially intelligent math manipulative” to describe how using the Hands-On Math apps differs from the concrete manipulative devices traditionally used in classrooms.

Measurement

Reading The Ruler

Number Sense

Motion Math: Hungry Fish

The folks at Motion Math have done it again! Hungry fish is a beautifully designed app that encourages mastery of basic addition and subtraction math facts and true number sense through a simple yet catchy game. You are given a fish that can only eat certain numbers at certain times. Very young children need only to match the correct number to the number on the fish. In more advanced levels children will need to add numbers together to make sure the fish can eat them (5=1+4, 2+3, 5+0).

Skip Math: Skip Counting Games

Skip Math is a “Doodle Jump” style game in which a boy or girl character jumps from platform to platform trying not to fall. Unlike “Doodle Jump,” however, children playing Skip Math must land on the platform that correlates to the correct number. For example, when counting by fours you must land on 4, then 8, then 12, etc. The movement, music, hopping character and they actually hear the counting as they jump all contribute to the entertainment value of the game, and means your child will be learning while having fun.
