Assessment Project

  1. Problem: The purpose of this assessment is to measure the amount of muscle mass gained as well as fat loss in college students aging from 18-22 who are interested in making a change in their bodies and lives.
  1. Refining the Problem: The population which the rating scale will pertain to involves college aged students ranging from the ages of 18-22. This will include both males and females. Most of the population will likely have an above average body fat percentage but are more than willing to make a change. These college students may or may not be involved with a sports team whether that is through the NCAA or intramurals. These students are interested in gaining muscle mass while losing fat through hard work in both the gym and through a strict diet.
  1. Refining the Problem: There will be a pretest before the start of this program in order to evaluate currently where each individual is and to personally customize goals for each and every individual. During this pretest there will be a height and weigh-in as well as a hydrostatic weighing in order to see where everyone’s body fat percentage is at. This will be done privately and individually for the sake of insecurity since we don’t want to insult or discourage anyone. After the program is completed, there will be a posttest. This posttest will evaluate what progress was made and will also give recommendations and modifications on how the clients can further progress on their journey to lead healthier lifestyles. Motivation will be constantly given throughout this program. Whether we have to verbally give it or give motivation through the use of videos, there shouldn’t be any reason for any of our population to lose any bit of motivation. This program will implement weekly feedback to let the clients know if they are doing well or if they need to improve in a certain aspect of the program. We will work on improvement from many facets including both lifting and eating properly. For some clients, we will have to take smaller steps to work towards achieving a larger, lengthier goal.
  1. Refining the Problem: The characteristics we decided to develop will be 5 of the major compound lifts for different body parts. These lifts include the Bench Press, the squat, the deadlift, the military press, and the barbell row. The reason for choosing these exercises is because they don’t involve just one muscle, instead they are compound lifts which involve multiple muscles and will be a testament to if their bodies are becoming all around stronger with no deficient body parts.
  1. Instrumentation and Methodology: My scale will be a pretty simple one to grasp the concept of. The scale will range from 1-10 and will be given for multiple aspects of the program since you cannot just evaluate the entire program with one scale. The reason for this is because everyone will be better at a certain aspect of the routine than another and that varies from person to person. Scores ranging from 1-3 will be classified as needing to improve. Scores ranging from 4-7 will be classified as making progress while scores ranging from 8-10 would be considered excellent progress.
  1. Instrumentation and Methodology: In order for there to be a rating scale there would have to be a place where we can implement this program. This would require a semi large facility with all of the proper weight training equipment. Most gyms will suffice so I would have to contact several gyms or possibly Rowan University to find a place where we can exercise daily. Prior to beginning the program, there will be informational videos and a presentation given to all of those participating in the program. This will show the clients how to properly perform certain exercises that will cause injury if done incorrectly. These videos are also designed to be very informational towards dieting because with some people, the problem is as simple as not knowing how to eat healthy rather than discipline.
  1. Analysis of Results: I would use the results of the rating scale to evaluate how each person will likely progress as they continue the program. I will also use the rating scale as motivation for those who still need improvement. Sometimes seeing that you are struggling on paper in the form of a grade is all the motivation you need to turn things around and work even harder. I will use formative evaluation rather than summative because this will be used as almost feedback so that both I and the client can make changes if necessary in order to improve and progress. Summative evaluation involves comparing the results to an average or norm and with this program we are stressing the fact that everyone is different and has a different baseline.

Section Two-Actual Rating Scale

Lift / Pretest Score / Current Test Score / Rating(Scale of 1-5)
1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest / Evaluation/Improvements
Bench Press
Squat
Deadlift
Military Press
Barbell Row

This rating scale will show the progress each person has made with each of these compound lifts. These lifts all involve multiple muscles so it will be an efficient way to determine how they are progressing as a whole and if there is a deficiency in any part of the body.

Client Section: Please provide any important information regarding your scores above. This may include how you think you did, how you think you are progressing, if you like or dislike the program, how your diet was, how hard you worked, etc.
