2016 REDMEN TENNIS
TEAM RULES AND REGULATIONS
1.) Tryouts:
Any student athlete wishing to tryout MUST have a physical on file with the Killingly High School Nurse.(Physicals are good for 13 months) Students must also be academically eligible having had no more then one F in Quarter 2.
2.) Practice:
There will be no tolerance for players who are late or unprepared for practice! Any student athlete who cannot attend practice must notify the coach directly at least 1 day in advance. In the case of an emergency or school absence the player is expected to contact or leave a voice message for the coach by the end of the school day. A player is not to have someone else relay a message. Unexcused absences will result in team consequences that may include match suspensions or removal from the program. Being late to practice is equal to ½ absence. A player missing practice for any reason the day before a match will notstart that match. (Exceptions will be made for things such as a college visit, funeral, emergency, etc) Any player who is late to school (comes in after 9:30) or does not attend school (unless for a school related activity)cannot practice or play on that day.
Any player staying after school for academic help needs to notify the coach inadvance and bring a signed pass from that teacher. Any player that receives a teacher detention will be subject to the same penalty as they would befor an unexcused absence. It is the player’s responsibility to make every effort to make personal appointments (i.e. haircuts, dentist appointments, meetings, etc.) at times that do not conflict with their tennis schedules. Vacations during the season are strongly discouraged. In the event of an absence due to a vacation that is unavoidable, an athlete must contact Coach Vogt prior to the start of the season.
Players will not be allowed to practice if they are unprepared. In the event that a practice time or location needs to be changed it will be posted in the boys locker room and will also be put on the school announcements. In the event that it is on a day that school does not meet or it is an emergency, Coach Vogt will send out a group message. If there is a concern or question it is eachplayer’s responsibility to call the coach for clarification.
3.)Academics:
Every student-athlete’s first obligation is to make sure that they are in good academic standing. If you are behind or having difficulties in any class it is your responsibility to get the extra help needed. It is very important that you also keep Coach Vogt informed of any other academic issues that you may have. Players with poor grades may be asked to leave the team until those grades are brought up. All student-athletes must also be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credits per semester to participate in athletics. Any player who does not participate or earn full credit in each PE class will not be allowed to participate in tennis activities on that day.
4.) Personal Conduct:
Players are expected to carry themselves in a respectful and appropriate manner on and off the court. You represent Killingly Tennis and should always act with class and respect. This includes using appropriate language, making responsible decisions, having a positive attitude and displaying good sportsmanship. Inappropriate or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated!Don’t do anything that brings embarrassmentto you, the program, the school, or the community!
5.)Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs:
Zero Tolerance. The use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, steroids, or any other illegal substance will result in the removal from the tennis program.Attendance at peer-centered activities in which alcohol or drugs are available is also prohibited.(See the Student-Athlete Handbook for further explanation.) Players that have an opportunity to do community service as an alternate penalty will only be allowed to do so with permission from the tennis coaching staff.
6.) Hazing:
Hazing is unacceptable and will be dealt with in the strictest manner. If this behavior is occurring it should be reported to the coaching staff immediately.
7.)School Discipline:
Any playersuspended from school will not be allowed to participate until he returns. A student-athlete that receives In-school suspension(ISS) will not be allowed to play or practice on that day. Additional game suspensions and penalties will be determined based on the severity of the offense and upon review by the coaching staff.
Any player receiving an Extended day detention will be suspended for 1 match. The suspension will take place closest to when the consequence was assigned. Any student-athlete receiving 3 office referrals during the season may be removed from the program. See Practice: for teacher detention penalties.
Students are expected to be on time to school. If a student-athlete has frequent tardiness during the season they will be placed on probation with further tardiness resulting in team penalties. Other school violations will be handled according to the Student-Athlete Handbook or on a case by case basis.
8.)Locker/Equipment RoomPolicies:
Do not leave belongings unattended or unlocked at any time!The tennis equipment and locker roomsshould be kept clean and orderly at all times. Take care of and put back equipment neatly. No one should leave after a match or practice until everything is cleaned up and put away. Any information regarding practices, meetings, schedules, duties, etc. will be posted in the boy’s locker room. Any player that cannot perform their weekly duty must make arrangements with a teammate for coverage.
9.)Appearance/Uniforms:
Redmen Tennis players will wear their uniform with pride!Sloppiness is inexcusable. Players should seea coach immediately if there are any problems regarding their uniform. Jewelry is never to be worn to a practice or game.Athletesneed to make sure that they are maintaining good personal hygiene.
10.)Transportation:
Every player must take the bus to away matches and return home with the team. Any exception must be approved at least one day in advance with Coach Vogt and the player must submit a written note stating the reason for leaving that also includes an emergency contact number. The player will only be allowed to leave with a designated parent or guardian.The bus will leave at the scheduled time for each match. If you are late, you will miss the bus. Any player that does not take the bus (without prior approval) will not play in that match.
It is each player’s responsibility to keep the bus clean. There will beno tolerance for leaving the bus dirty. Other inappropriate behavior such as loud music, screaming, leaving your seat, or putting anything out the window will result in strict penalties. A team captain will be responsible for being the last one off and checking the bus following every away match or scrimmage.
11.)Personal Behavior
The following behavior is unacceptable and will result in team penalties:
1.)unsportsmanlike behavior
2.)bad mouthing teammates
3.)talking back to a coach
4.)saying “I suck”, “I can’t” or any other negative self-talk
5.) using cell phones at any time during practice or agame. (without permission)
12.) Social Media:
Players will be held accountable for any inappropriate content that is shared through social media. Players should carefully consider the potential consequences of texting or posting pictures, videos, and/or comments that may be viewed, shared, or misinterpreted by others. Any derogatory language or remarks that may harm teammates, coaches, opponents or other students will not be tolerated! Incriminating photos or statements will also result in strict penalties that may include being removed from the team. Do not have a false sense of security about your rights to freedom of speech. Understand that social networking sites are NOT a place to do or say whatever you want without repercussions that extend beyond school and tennis.
13.)Paperwork/Assessment Fees:
It is eachplayer’s responsibility to turn in paperworkon-time. Penalties will be imposed for players who are late turning things in. Each player must pay or make arrangements to pay the $100 athletic assessment feeprior to the 1st match of the season. The assessment fee for student-athletesthat are signed up for the free/reduced lunch program may be waived or reduced but this must be discussed with Coach Vogt prior to the payment deadline.
14.)Varsity Letter Requirements:
To qualify for yourvarsity letter or award a player must meet the following criteria;
* play in 8 varsity matches.
**The coaching staff reserves the right to award or withhold a varsity letter in situations where circumstances deem it appropriate.Any player that does not complete the season with the team will forfeit all team awards.
15.) Philosophy/Accountability:
Redmen Tennis players will learn the proper skills and strategies of the game while demonstrating good sportsmanship. Players will learn the meaning of commitment, responsibility, hard work, and sacrifice, while learning to instill the competitive edge within themselves. Players are expected to be dedicated to the Redmen Tennis Program in all facets and will be held accountable for failure to follow team rules.If a player has a concern related to the tennis programor it’s rules, they should approach the coach before involving a parent or the Athletic Director as chain of command should be followed.In addition to the tennis team rules, all rules and regulations in the Student-Athletic Handbook apply.All players and parents should read and be familiar with all aspects of the handbook.
