This section is where you tell the assessors who you are, what you do and how you do it. Often your ‘teaching philosophy’ will form the basis of your teaching context in a Teaching Merit Certificate application. You might also choose to introduce your commendable practice in light of a teaching problem or issue that you might have had to overcome, or where you have been innovative in a particular unit, for example.

First in this section, you should outline the focus area that your application will address.Then, you need to provide evidence to substantiate the claim that your teaching is commendable. Evidence can be: qualitative and quantitative; from students, peers and people outside of the university; examples of scholarship and/or engagement in learning and teaching programs; and leadership in the field. Contextualise your evidence rather than just listing it – and think carefully about presenting your evidence in a way that is clear (particularly if using eVALUate data).

  • from another member of staff in your School, Faculty or Division who can vouch for the claims made in the application (particularly if you are the Unit Coordinator).

This statement should be no more than 250 words and support the evidence given in your application. The statement of support must be signed, indicating that the Unit Coordinator or colleaguevalidates the claims/evidenceprovided in your application.

Professional Learning Plan(for 2nd and 3rd Teaching Merit Certificate applications only):If this is your second or third Teaching Merit Certificate, you must provide a plan for how you will engage in professional learning activities to enhance your teaching over the next 12 month period. Please note the implementation of this plan will be considered in future teaching award applications.
