Course Title:Assessment and Individual Planning for Pupils with
Special Educational Needs
The Special Education Support Service (SESS), under the auspices of Teacher Education Section, Department of Education and Skills is providing a one day continuing professional development course on the above topics in your region for teachers working with pupils with special educational needs in primary schools. These courses are open to one full-time Resource/Learning Support teacher and one mainstream class teacher per school.Aims:
- To outline a variety of assessment methods, including formal and informal procedures
- To enable teachers to utilise assessment to establish a baseline, identify needs, plan and identify areas for improvement, track and monitor progress
- To provide information on assessment tests regarding language, literacy and numeracy
- To outline information contained in an individual education plan
- To explain the steps involved in the planning process
- To provide information on setting targets for students with special educational needs

Application Procedures
- Please note that these courses are for teachers as outlined above.
- The course will run from 9.00am - 3.00pm. Please note registration commences at 8.45am.
- Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Typically, substitution for this seminar will only be allowed by the Teacher Education Section, DES, to classroom teachers who have primary responsibility for pupils with a special educational need & if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal. Please contact the SESS before the seminar if you require substitution.
- To reserve a place on the above seminar please complete a separate application form for each applicant (forms can be photocopied) and return to Special Education Support Service, Cork Education Support Centre, The Rectory, Western Road, Cork or fax 021-4255647
- Closing date for applications is two weeks before each seminar.
- Please ensure application forms are completed fully including teacher numbers and mobile telephone numbers. Please be advised that incomplete application forms will be returned.
- Successful applicants will be notified by post.
