points / To be able to work with positive and negative integers / Who can tell me what an integer is?
Give 5 children integers on cards – 5,4,3,2,1 and ask them to stand in order.
What comes before one? Zero. What does zero actually mean? That there is nothing – no value. Used as place holder.
So what comes before zero?
Give out the negative number cards and ask children to stand in order. Who can tell me where people should stand? / Can you spot coordinates on a grid?
Can you plot coordinates using positive numbers?
Can you plot coordinates using positive and negative numbers? (with teacher support)
Can you plot coordinates in all four quadrants, using positive, and negative numbers? / On IWB, look at map – what do children notice? How can we describe where the School is? Square D5 etc.
Ask a few more questions.
Now show children the coordinate grid.
Using our number cards, how could we label the axis? Where do the negative numbers go?
Label x then y.
Write the coordinate (5,3) down and then plot coordinate. Can anyone tell me the rule for which axis we plot/read first? Explain (x,y) and the way we can remember this is ‘Along the corridor and up the stairs.’ / Who managed to plot and read co-ordinates?
Were there any difficulties? How did you deal with these?
If you were going to teach someone else how to work with coordinates, what advice would you give them in order to help them? / Number cards: -5 to 5
IWB set up with ‘Coordinates’ notebook.
3 different success criteria on dry-wipe board with examples underneath.
3 activities:
Alien mask, which is just one quadrant; grids for these * 30 for both sheet and grid
Maths call activity * 30 plus grids for each student.
Battleships activity * 30 4 quadrant grids and ship cut outs for work sheet.
