Unit: ‘W’ question #1: Where

Grade/ # of students/ level: 4/ 40/ beginner

Class length: 50 minutes

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Recall the new vocabulary (prepositions: above, across from, behind, in front of, in, over, under, on).
  • Use the new vocabulary in writing/speaking while asking and answering ‘where’ questions.

Key Expressions: Students will focus on using the following language:

  • Students will use proper nouns, pronouns and prepositions in writing/speaking ‘where’ questions and answers.

Teaching Aids/Materials: Teacher will require the following:

  • Flashcard handout for each student.
  • PowerPoint presentation that parallels flashcard handout.
  • Worksheet to allow students to practice new vocabulary within ‘where’ questions and answers.

Steps and Procedures:

1. Introduction (5 min): Greetings, settle the class by asking five review questions from previous lesson on places, presentation of today’s objectives/schedule.

2. Engage (10 min): Pass out flashcard worksheet (see attachment preposition.docx), inform class they have 10 min to color, cut and organize new vocabulary flashcards. (Teacher will circulate, keep students on schedule and load PowerPoint presentation during this time.)

3. Study (15 min): Present new vocabulary via PowerPoint/projector. Students will write new vocabulary words opposite the flashcard image while orally repeating the word at the teacher’s cue.

4. Activate (15 min): Pass out practice worksheet (see attachment prepworksheet.docx.) Students will write ‘where’ questions with the provided proper noun/pronoun and then write the corresponding answer. When finished, students will orally practice the question/answer as dialogue. Teacher will monitor, assist, correct and guide throughout activate process.

5. Summarize (5 min): Quick recap, have students finish worksheet at home if still incomplete, have students study new vocabulary for test in two days. Goodbyes.
