Playing Tests and Performances (50%)

Concerts are “final exams” and are required. Only exceptions are family emergencies or illness. Other activities are not accepted as excused.

An unexcused absence from a performance cannot be made up.

A pre-arranged absence from a performance requires a signed note from a parent and authorization from Ms. Muhr at least one week in advance. Alternative assignments will be required for excused absences.

Concert Grading

Concerts are worth 100 points:

  • Being on time: 10 points
  • Wearing proper concert attire: 10 points
  • Having necessary materials: 20 points
  • Being musically prepared: 30 points
  • Being respectful during each ensemble’s performance: 30 points

Rehearsal Expectations

  • Come in ready to rehearse and get work done.
  • Do not talk or play out of turn. This helps diminish confusion and increases efficiency in rehearsals.

Music Room Expectations

  • Show respect for people, music, equipment, and our mission in music classes.
  • Do not play someone else’s instrument. Our instruments are expensive and we don’t want them to break. Never touch an instrument that isn’t yours! Curiosity is great, but if that curiosity leads you to break someone else’s instrument then you will be held financially responsible for it.
  • Be in your seat with all necessary materials when the bell rings so as to not be marked tardy. Instruments cannot make music if they are not assembled. Your instrument must be assembled three minutes after the tardy bell or you will be marked tardy.
  • Strive to make every rehearsal a quality investment of your time and energy.
  • Take responsibility for and accept the consequences of your actions and choices.
  • You will be an enthusiastic music student. . .making music is fun! Practice hard until you get it right; the better you play, the more fun you will have!

With these goals in mind, the following rules apply to the music room

  1. All school rules apply.
  2. No food, drink, or gum in rehearsals. Water is encouraged. Please do not share water bottles.
  3. You are each responsible for your own personal items. Only instruments and music folders may be stored in the music room.
  4. Do not play the percussion instruments unless you are a percussionist or have permission directly from Ms. Muhr.

Pep Band

Pep band is voluntary for middle school students (i.e. not required). You are welcome to join the pep band and play the songs that you know for home football games. Entrance is free for students playing in the pep band.

All performances are school activities and all school rules apply, including the school dress code.

Football games begin at 7pm. Setup begins at 6:30pm.

.

Concert Expectation

Performance behavior for both performers and audience members is founded on a basic respect for the hard work and hours of practice involved in the preparation of the performance.

Performers are expected to behave in a professional manner. You will:

  • Arrive on time.
  • Dress appropriately (see: Concert Dress)
  • Not talk during performances.
  • Be a strong representative of yourself, your school, and your community at all times.

Concert Dress

Black dress pants, dresses or skirts below the knee length. White dress shirts (black ties optional) or blouse. No t-shirts. Black dress shoes, black socks.

--School dress code applies.—

Be professional, have a good time, and allow others to have a good time.

Perform all of the time, even in rehearsals

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
