Teacher Narratives as
Reflective Practice in Mathematics

Fall 2009 – Spring 2010

Application is Due No Later than Wednesday, October 21, 2009

The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP) began in fall 2003 with funding from
the National Science Foundation (NSF). We have achieved so much over these past several
years as MPS has become a district-wide professional learning community for mathematics.

Math Teacher Leaders are well-established, learning targets aligned to state standards are in place, curricular resource materials are more consistent, CABS and descriptive feedback are used, lesson planning with the WALT process is becoming stronger, school-based math action plans engage many teachers in learning at their school sites, and UWM-MMP courses are (almost) always filled to capacity. We have learned so much about mathematics content, teaching, learning, and assessment. Most importantly, though, MPS students have benefited and have demonstrated statistically significant increases in mathematics achievement on the WKCE.

It is time to tell our story. NSF has given us additional funds to offer this free 2-credit UWM course for teachers of mathematics and math teacher leaders to reflect upon and develop narratives of their professional practice. The narratives must describe the impact of the MMP on math instructional and assessment strategies and school-based math teacher leadership. The course includes a focus on professional writing using APA guidelines.

It is time to publish our stories. Each individual accepted into the course must agree to allow their written narratives to be “published” on the MMP Web site and compiled into a monograph of MMP Stories. Each narrative will be reviewed by project leaders to determine whether it will be accepted for MMP publication. Enrollment in the course, does not guarantee your story will be published. In addition, authors may be encouraged to consider submission of their work to a professional journal.

Dates: Fall 2009: November 3 & 17, December 1
Spring 2010: January 12, February 2 & 16, March 2 & 23

Time: Tuesdays, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Location: MPS Central Services, 5225 West Vliet Street

Enrollment in this course is limited. You must complete an application, which includes proposed writing topics related to the MMP with rationales for the topics. To be considered for the course, you must currently be a teacher of mathematics or a math teacher leader in a school that has been active in the MMP for several years.

NSF funding allows the MMP to waive resident, off-campus tuition at the undergraduate level. Audits are not permitted. If you are currently enrolled in a graduate program in which the course fulfills a requirement, you may apply for a graduate tuition waiver.
