Course Description

Honors Chemistry is a yearlong course dedicated to the study of the physical world and its composition. There is a lecture/class aspect and lab/experimental aspect to the class where we learn a concept and then either see it in action or test its application. Both parts are very important to the understanding of this exciting topic. I hope that by the end of this year you have a deeper understanding of the world around you! It will be a great year if we all stay safe in the lab and do our part to be prepared for the lessons.

Materials

  • 5 subject notebook or binder (warm-ups, articles, notes, quizzes, homework)
  • Scientific Calculator (TI 30X-IIS)
  • Pen or Pencil, dry erase marker, highlighter or colored pen
  • 2 rolls of Paper Towels

Grading

Quarter grades will be calculated based on total points accumulated throughout the quarter and will be distributed in the following percentages:

Tests – 50%

Quizzes – 30%

Labs – 15%

Homework – 5%

Make-up Policy: Attendance is extremely important. If you are absent it is your responsibility to complete any missed work. You will have one day for every day absent to turn in work after an excused absence. Tests and quizzes will be made up before or after school. You must schedule a time with me to make-up tests or quizzes. All test and quiz make-ups should be completed within 2 weeks of the original test or quiz.

Homework/Classwork: All work will be graded for correctness and completion.

Labs: All labs will be completed for the week and will be due the following Tuesday.

Science Articles: Each week you will find and print out a current science news article from a reliable news publication and paste it into your notebook. If you choose to use a magazine, you may only use one article from each month’s issue. Included with the article must be:

  • Date the article was written which must be within the week that you are submitting the article for (no back dates or make-ups!)
  • Publication the article was taken from
  • 2-3 sentence summary of the article

The articles will be collected each Quarter for an additional Quiz grade.
