Syllabus

Class description: Introduction to scientific psychology as applied to human behavior, including but not limited to: research methods, prominent contributions by psychologists such as Freud, Skinner, Maslow, Pavlov, and Piaget and their psychological theories. In addition students will also learn about psychological disorders, learning, motivation, emotions, personality, anxiety, phobias, and stress, sensation and perception. These principles and theories will be applied to the human experience.

This class will have periodic quizzes and tests that contain extended response questions (essays) and will require you to work hard, be attentive in class, and contribute to class discussion. There will be class projects that you will complete individually and sometimes with a partner. There is the expectation that you keep up with your reading and come prepared to discuss and contribute to discussions that we will have in class in the form of debates and in whole group and small group discussions. Failure to participate will severely impact your grade.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of psychology and its development.

2. Show understanding of the scientific methods used to study behavior and mental processes.

3.Demonstrate knowledge of the contributions made by psychologists such as Freud, Skinner, Piaget, Maslow and Pavlov.

4. Describe the major theories of psychology, how they are used, and how they are applied to the human experience.

5. Accurately interpret the theories made by psychologists regarding motivation, learning, sensation and perception, human emotions, group processes, personality, and human development.

6. Demonstrate an appreciation for the uniqueness of the individual.

7. Differentiate and describe major psychological disorders.

Course Requirements:

1. Class attendance and participation.

2. Reading of all assigned materials.

3. Completion of exams, homework, papers and projects.

Course Format:

A variety of teaching methods will be utilized in this class, including somelecture, class discussion, audio-visual presentations, small group discussions and also work using the computers.

Course Goals:

The goals of this course are:

  1. To increase your understanding of the various fields of psychology and how it relates to the human experience.
  2. To develop a base of knowledge that will be beneficial to students wanting to explore psychology after they graduate.
  3. To educate all students about the uniqueness of the human experience and increase their understanding of the major contributors to pscyhology and their theories.

Method of Evaluation:

Exams

Exams will consist of mostly essay questions and some multiple choice and short answer questions.The exams will cover material from the designated chapters in the text, lectures, handouts and films.

Make-up exam policy: No make-up exams will be given except in the case of extreme circumstances such as serious illness or accident or death in the family. Written proof from a physician (not the school nurse) will be required. To qualify for a make-up exam, I must be notified either prior to the exam (highly preferable) or within 24 hours of the scheduled test. When permission is granted, make-up exams must be completed within 48 hours (2 days) from the original test date at my convenience. Make-up exams will differ from the regular exams. Failure to take an exam or submit any work will result in a score of zero.

NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!

Course Grades: refer to student handbook for the grading scale

For this class 60% of your grade will come from exams, projects, and other forms of assessment.

40% of your grade will come from homework, classwork, participation, and contributions to class discussion

Computer policy: Absolutely NO FOOD OR DRINK IN CLASS!

Classroom rules will be posted around the room. These rules must be followed in addition to the rules outlined in your student handbook for school.

Students that are absent and need make up work. Go to the file hanging on the wall that says make up work and collect any material that you may have missed. Also, be sure to talk to me about the length of time you have tom complete your assignment. For those of you that miss an extended period of time I may allow you more than one day to complete your work. Remember that it is your responsibility to get your work!!
