Motivation

Part 1: Tell us why you wish to teach literacy to adults. Within this, include any relevant work or voluntary experience (e.g. in voluntary organisations, community groups, your workplace, unions, youth groups etc.) and informal literacy teaching (150-200 words)

1When people are asked what makes for a good adult course they invariably identify
2the same sort of factors. Their views can be categorised into three major groups:
3The first has to do with course design. People describe a good course as being
4relevant to their needs with clear statements of purpose and having appropriate
5content presented at the right level and pace. In addition, they value a variety of
6interesting teaching and learning methods, together with opportunities to try out
7what they have learnt with feedback about how they are doing. The second
8category might be called ‘principles, values and tutor style’. What is of importance
9to people is that as participants, they are treated in adult ways, their experience is
10welcomed and valued, they actively participate, and that they feel at ease with each
11other and with what is taking place within the group…. Finally people itemise a
12whole range of factors which have to do with efficient organisation and
13administration. These include domestic issues such as physical access,
14refreshments, seating, a clean and comfortable environment, as well as adequate
15pre-course communication and follow up.
16In summary, adults say that a good course or session is one that helps them to
17engage in relevant learning experiences in a variety of interesting ways with the
18help of a responsive and supportive tutor.
