Objective:
-Increase vocabulary.
-Recognize characteristics of a memoir.
-Understand cause and effect.
Procedure:Warm-up-Turn in tall tales. Copy vocabulary in vocabulary/notes section of notebook. Draw a cause/effect diagram, illustrating the effects of the political struggles in Alvarez’s life. We will read “My First Free Summer” by Julia Alvarez on p. 116 in the Literature book. Students will list 3 effects in their diagram that the political struggles had on Julia Alvarez’s life.
Questions:
  1. Why do you think Alvarez chose the title: “My First Free Summer.” Write down your inference.
  2. What parts of the story were suspenseful? Describe them.
  3. How does Alvarez’s attitude change about the U.S.?

Objective:
-Increase reading fluency.
-Create a timeline.
Procedure:Warm-up-What is a hero? Describe a hero that you have in your life or that you know of from the news, etc. Discussion. Students will buddy read “Truth, justice, and (fill in the blank)”. Purpose for reading: Create a timeline and evaluate how the motto for Superman changed over time. Students will highlight important dates, put ?s next to events with no dates, and write questions about the text. After reading, students will create a timeline, noting the date and event, with a particular focus on Superman’s motto. After students have completed a timeline, we will have a class discussion about the article.

Procedure:Finish yesterday’s activities. If there is extra time, students can work on their tall tales.

Objective:
-Recognize suspense in a story.
-Recognize literary devices used by an author.
Procedure: Warm-up- Complete the brainstorming and Anticipation Guide for “The Tell-Tale Heart”. We will discuss students’ answers. Then, we will listen to “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Alan Poe. After reading, students will go back and look at their anticipation guide to see if they want to change any of their answers. Students will then complete a packet for “The Tell-Tale Heart”.
