Day 1:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Free bowl to warm up bowling arm. Upper body stretches.
Intro: Go over what is going to happen the next few days in class.
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day) : Pre-Assessment. Introduce the proper grip when holding a bowling ball. Allow the students to practice bowling throughout the lesson using different grips
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.): Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Instructor assessing the level of psychomotor ability before any major teaching of the skill has taken place.
Closure: Debrief the class by going over the cues and what was learned in class today / Day 2:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Free bowl focusing on the grip learned in the previous class
Intro: Go over the cues used in the grip and stance when bowling
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Introduce the correct stance and foot placement used when bowling and focus on finding the correct target.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Self-assessment of the affective domain using the Hellison’s levels of personal and social responsibility
Closure: Debrief the class by going over the cues and what was learned in class today
Day 3:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Warm up with free bowl focusing on the correct stance and grip used when bowling.
Intro: Go over cues used in the 4 step approach
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Using cues learned, students will practice the 4-step approach.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will participate in a peer assessment while practicing the skills. Checking that their partner is implementing the cues correctly.
Closure: Debrief the class by going over the cues and what was learned in class today. / Day 4:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Warm up with free bowl while focusing on the four-step approach.
Intro: Go over the arrows on the lane and how to use them
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Students will practice using the arrows on the lanes and different ways to direct the ball.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will demonstrate understanding of the use of the arrows on the lane by doing a homework assignment to be handed in next class
Closure: Debrief the class and check for understand on the concept behind the arrows on the lines.
Day 5:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Warm up with free bowl, focusing on aiming with the arrows
Intro: Go over techniques used when trying to pick up a spare and bowl a strike
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day):
Using the techniques learned working with a partner discover new ways to throw the ball and what is the most accurate when trying to get a strike.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Self-assessment of the affective domain using Hellison’s levels of personal and social responsibility
Closure: Debrief the class by going over the techniques for bowling a strike. / Day 6:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Students warm up by trying bowl strikes and having a competition with a partner to get the most strikes.
Intro: Introduce how to keep score in bowling
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Students will keep score of their own bowling games throughout the whole class.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s):
Students will peer assess each other’s scorecards to make sure they are doing it correctly.
Closure: Debrief the class on the general idea behind scoring and what they learned in class today.
Day 7:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Students will warm up with free bowl and keep score of their own games.
Intro: Review all the cues for the grip, stance, approach and release
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day):
Students will bowl a full game concentrating on their score while keeping their own score as well.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will be given a written exam on how to keep score and the cues used in the whole bowling approach.
Closure: Debrief the class by reviewing the cues, testing next class. / Day 8:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Students will warm up with free bowl and keep score of their own games
Intro: Review all the cues for the grip, stance, approach and release
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day):
Students will bowl continuously throughout the class trying to beat their previous score each time.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.): Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will be assessed on their ability to perform the correct grip, stance, approach and release.
Closure: Debrief the class on what was covered and discuss the next class lesson.
Day 9:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Students will participate in free bowl to warm up and also stretch out their upper body.
Intro: Go over the cues used to bowl a “hook”
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day):
Students get into groups and take turns practicing different techniques used to throw a “hook” when bowling.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will demonstrate understanding of the “hook” cues by reciting them upon leaving the bowling alley.
Closure: Debrief the class by going over the cues and what was learned in class today. / Day 10:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Students will participate in free bowl to warm up and also stretch out their upper body.
Intro: Go over the rules of match play. Emphasize good sportsmanship
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Students will bowl competitively with a partner. Switching partners when the game is complete
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Self-assessment of the affective domain using the Hellison’s levels of personal and social responsibility.
Closure: Debrief the class by talking about positive sportsmanship and what they learned in class today.
Day 11:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game):
Intro: Discuss the rules and how the tournament will take place.
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Begin a tournament where the students compete against each other and keep their own scores.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s):
Self-assessment of the affective domain using the Hellison’s levels of personal and social responsibility
Closure: Debrief the class by discuss the results thus far of the tournament and how people could possibly improve their ranking. / Day 12:
Instant Activity (IA) / Warm-up (Name and brief description of the IA, game): Warm up by playing a game with a partner
Intro: Finishing the tournament
Lesson focus (Items to be covered during this day): Finish the tournament and have the students keep their own score.
Fitness component (Heart rate, step counts, etc.):
Students will record their heart rate and level of physical activity by recording data off of their watches.
Assessment(s): Students will demonstrate understanding of all the cues, rules, and techniques used in bowling by taking an end of unit exam and scoring at least an 80%.
Closure: Discuss the final results of the tournament and what is going to be introduced next class.
