Issue 15

2 September, 2010

For two days last week a Teaching and Learning Auditor, Andrew Hawke, visited our school. Andrew spoke with the leadership team, classroom teachers and members of the P and C. Andrew’s comments were favourable and we are awaiting a written report.

Yesterday we trialled a different departure strategy with one of our students. The student responded positively however the strategy couldn’t be fully implemented because the driver was hemmed in by members of our school community who continue to park in the drop off/pick up zone. I remind all families that the covered turn around area is a drop off/pick up zone and the signage reflects this. Should parents need to park, they can do so in the front carpark. In this instance, it is most disappointing that a program for one of our students has been compromised by members of our community not following signage.

News From D1: The six students of D1 (John, Madison, Natalie, David, Stevie and Danielle) have been extremely busy during Term 3. For science, we have been learning about water and how to use water responsibly. Our class visited the Ross River Dam to check out our local water supply. D1 has also been exploring Dreamtime stories and indigenous art. We visited the Cultural Centre and also had a great time at the Cultural Fest.

As the end of Term 3 approaches things don’t look like slowing down for D1. The students have been busy creating some wonderful gifts for the TCLC Father’s Day Stall being held on Thursday 2nd September 2010. Happy Father’s Day to all our dads and we hope you have a great day. Tracey Kokanovic (D1 Teacher)

Father’s Day Stall: Students in years 8 to 12 have been busy making craft items to sell at a school Father’s Day Stall. There were coffee cups packed with goodies, drink coolers and creative, colourful cork boards to purchase. Students also handled the money transactions. The months of work involved with planning, designing and creating the gifts will surely be appreciated by Dads. Happy Father’s Day.

Carina Ward: Craft teacher

School Holidays: the last day of school this term will be Friday 17 September, school will resume for students on Tuesday 5 October. Monday 18 October will also be a pupil free day.

P&C Meeting: the next meeting will be held on 13 September 6.30pm, all welcome.

Voluntary Contributions: thank you to the families who have paid their school voluntary contributions for this term. The voluntary contribution is $20.00 per term per student. The school appreciates your contribution to the enhancement of your child’s educational programs. We are happy to receive your contribution in full, or paid weekly or fortnightly payments.

Willing Workers Beautify Our School Grounds: On Saturday 28/8/10, a large group of “Helping Hands” came to our school. These “hands” are members of a church group and came armed with gardening tools, a water blaster and a willingness to have a go at anything that needed doing. There was a group of artists amongst these people so we put them to work in middle playground. We now have an excellent display of traffic control signs, animal shapes, and whimsical creatures on the concrete pathways where students play and ride bikes and scooters.

Meanwhile, other workers were in the greenhouse and in the area surrounding the wormfarm. All the garden beds in this area have been cleared of weeds and unwanted plant matter, the concrete table and seats have been cleaned and painted and look a lot more user friendly, mould has been removed from the concrete path, the greenhouse has been tidied and many of the plants have been repotted.

While this was happening others were weeding the garden beds near ‘H’ block and another volunteer repaired any school bikes and scooters that needed it.

Many thanks to the members of the Church of Latter Day Saints for coming to our school. All the students and staff who use the playgrounds, the bikes and the greenhouse appreciate your efforts.

Cowboys Training Session: there will be an open training session this Friday at Dairy Farmers Stadium between 4.30pm and 5.30pm –all families are welcome to come along.
