·  The girls bowling team kept their unbeaten streak alive last night by defeating Mt. Dora Christian 3-0. The boys team ended in a tie. Next match is Thursday at Break Point Alley.

·  Congratulations to Emma Straub, Mimi Filkin, Meghan Santos and Ragyn for their 3rd place finish in their relay at conference this weekend. Congratulations to Mimi for her winning in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. She broke a 20 year conference record in the Backstroke. Good job ladies!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Central Florida Dreamplex is seeking current freshman, sophomore, and junior level high school students for its StarGazers volunteer program. The Dreamplex is a fitness and recreation center for children and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Only 15-20 volunteers will be chosen to be StarGazers, and the program will span one year (January-December, 2018) and result in at least 100 community service hours for each participant. First aid, CPR, and other training will be provided at no cost. The ideal candidate will be an individual who loves to work with children and is interested in therapeutic services, special education, or other related fields as a career choice. Those chosen to be StarGazers will assist with Dreamplex sports and recreational programs, and will have the opportunity to shadow physical, speech, and occupational therapists. Completed applications may be submitted by email to or dropped off at the Dreamplex, located in the Clermont Hillside Terrace complex (same building as Graffiti Junktion) Applications are due by November 6th.

It's a happy word that closely resembles its only relatives in form and meaning, and such is the case with whorl: it has intersecting lines in its history with whirl and whirligig. 1635 - Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, was banished from Massachusetts because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams had founded Providence, Rhode Island as a place for people to seek religious freedom.

1701 - The Collegiate School of Connecticut was chartered in New Haven. The name was later changed to Yale.

1776 - A group of Spanish missionaries settled in what is now San Francisco, CA.

1781 - The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War took place in Yorktown, VA. The American forces, led by George Washington, defeated the British troops under Lord Cornwallis.

1812 - During the War of 1812 American forces captured two British brigs, the Detroit and the Caledonia.

1855 - Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine motor.

1855 - Joshua C. Stoddard received a patent for his calliope.
