Tantalizing Tiffany Glass Exhibit Opens at Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Exhibit spans America’s Art Nouveau Period
(Elizabeth City, N.C., Sept.17, 2015) – Consider the lamp shade dripping with brilliant-colored poppies; a slender golden vase, perfect for containing a Calla Lily or two; and a stained glass window of a young woman bowing into a bramble of lime-colored flowers. There’s a bouquet of beautiful glass to behold when the exhibition Louis C. Tiffany: Art and Innovation opens Sept. 22 at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Featuring glasswork from the renowned American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933)and artifacts from the Tiffany and Company studio, the exhibit is free and open to the public for a year. Visitors who come on opening day can take in a curator’s tour and talk at 10:15 a.m. by Tom Wester, owner of the Wester Gallery in Roswell, Ga. He will discuss the work of Tiffany and the significance of the Art Nouveau movement, a period during the late-19th and early 20th centuries during which art was reflected in architecture, interior design, graphic art and decorative arts including jewelry and furniture.
Items featured in Louis C. Tiffany: Art and Innovation are on loan from Wester’s collection, other private collections and several institutions.
On display will be rare items mentioned above, including the circa 1910 lamp with an oriental poppy shade and a Cypriot glass base; a number of Favrile glass works including lamp sprays from Whalehead in Historic Corolla; and an urn-shaped vase that was displayed at the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific in Seattle, Wash., where Tiffany won a gold medal for his work.
